Set strategically between London and the south coast, Reigate & Banstead is a diverse borough, home to the largest resident populations in Surrey at almost 139,000 people. Our population is projected to grow at the fastest rate in Surrey and the number of older residents could increase by almost 70% over the next 20 years.
The borough’s thriving community life is based around its four distinct urban centres as well as a range of attractive villages and new communities, all of which are set amongst nationally designated landscape and attractive countryside, much of which is protected as green belt.
With good transport connections into London and the wider South East as well as Gatwick Airport on its doorstep, the borough has developed a buoyant local economy which employs almost 71,000 people and has attracted many national and international companies.
Good quality of life means that our borough continues to be a desirable place to live. Many of our urban and rural communities are highly prosperous; however, others are amongst the most deprived in Surrey with residents experiencing inequalities in health, education and employment. Closing the gap between our communities brings its own set of challenges.
The Council is made up of democratically elected Councillors who are accountable to the residents of the ward they represent. Together, they form the Council, which determines the policy framework and decides all major strategies and plans for the borough.
