About us

Welcome to South Ribble, you’ll find plenty to see and do. Why not visit Worden Park, which offers you 150 acres of parkland to sit and relax, explore the gardens and woodland or have fun in the children’s playground and on the miniature railway. The park has Green Flag status and is only a short walk from the centre of Leyland.

When you fancy a break, escape to the countryside either right on the edge of town at Worden Park or slightly further afield at Longton Brickcroft. You can burn off some energy on the local cycle paths, with a brisk walk through lovely countryside and woodland or by taking on the long-distance Ribble Way footpath. If you fancy a more relaxing day out, just follow one of our shorter “Walks for Health” routes on the handy leaflets, join a guided walk to see our local history and countryside or go fishing at Longton Brickcroft or Farington Lodges.

Just up the road, relax and spend time re-living the past at Samlesbury Hall. Stroll round the Great Hall where you can almost smell the feasts that would have been served up in front of a huge, roaring fire or work up an appetite yourself by exploring the Tudor grounds and browsing round the locally produced creative art and design and antiques on display.

Leyland has a rich industrial heritage, much of it based around the world famous Leyland buses and trucks. Take yourself on a nostalgic journey at the British Commercial Vehicle Museum in Leyland. You can travel back to when the buses and trucks in the unique vehicle collection were in daily use in towns and villages across Britain and throughout the world. Wander at your leisure round the new Leyland Town Centre Heritage Walk where special boards show you how the commercial vehicle industry shaped Leyland and see carefully preserved items from Leyland’s past at the South Ribble Museum.

Whether you're interested in nature, arts, crafts, history or the outdoors South Ribble has something to offer.

Community and living

South Ribble is a great place to live, work, visit and play.

We're lucky to have a great sense of community in South Ribble, and that's down to the hard working volunteers, individuals and community groups who make a tremendous difference in every part of our district.

The council has a role to play supporting the development of communities. In this section of our website you'll find out about community facilities near you, how we're working to ensure equality across the borough, and lots of information about how we're helping local people to stay safe.

Working for us

Training And Development

South Ribble is committed to ensuring its employees are equipped with the right skills to carry out their role within the Authority. The Personnel & Development team is responsible for identifying and prioritising corporate training needs and producing annual training plans in conjunction with the Performance Appraisal process. There are a number of courses available to all employees across the Authority covering a wide selection of subjects to cater for all training needs.

Investors In People

(IIP) is the national standard which sets a level of good practice for the training and development of people within organisations to achieve business goals. Investing in employees is good management practice. It is a recognised national standard which is evaluated externally by trained assessors.

The IIP Standard is based on four key principles. The principals are:

  • Commitment to invest in people to achieve business goals;
  • Planning how skills, individuals and teams are to be developed to achieve these goals;
  • Taking action to develop and use necessary skills in a well defined and continuing programme directly tied to business objectives; and
  • Evaluating outcomes of training and development for individuals’ progress towards goals, the value achieved and future needs.

South Ribble achieved IIP status in 1998. We are reassessed every three years and are committed to maintaining the award.
