About us

Surrey and Sussex Probation Trust was formed on 1 April 2010 following a merger between Surrey Probation Area and Sussex Probation Area.

We are contracted to provide offender management services in Surrey and Sussex as part of the National Offender Management Service (NOMS) by the Secretary of State.

We work closely with partners in the criminal justice system to protect the public and reduce reoffending. Other key partners include the police, Her Majesty's Courts Service, Crown Prosecution Service, Criminal Justice Boards, Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships, Her Majesty's Prison Service, local authorities, healthcare providers, employment and education agencies, the voluntary and private sectors, victims and communities.

We employ around 670 staff in Surrey and Sussex working in seven prisons, two approved premises, magistrates' courts and crown courts and our 12 main office locations. Other staff work in supporting roles such as training, research, IT, administration, finance and human resources.

Probation work is complex and demanding. Supervising offenders is a demanding occupation that not only involves the continuous assessment and management of risk, it also requires intervention skills to help motivate offenders to change.

To be effective, we need staff with the highest levels of integrity, skills and knowledge that are able to communicate their commitment to protecting the public.

  • Administrators - providing administrative support to probation staff
  • Community Payback - supervising offenders completing Unpaid Work in the community
  • Prison-based probation staff - working to prepare prisoners for their release into the community.

We also have a wide range of staff working is support roles including IT, Admin, Finance, HR and Communications.
