Gloucester is a major historic city with heritage assets of national and international significance from all periods. The City Council manages this special heritage, largely throught the planning process, maintains a ground-breaking HER and looks to facilitate engagement with and access to the city’s heritage for its communities and visitors.

We are seeking to appoint a dedicated, organised and highly motivated individual capable of delivering a diverse archaelolgical service for a special historic city.

Your work will be split between heritage (archaeology) related development management advice to developers and planners, and maintaining and developing the city’s HER. Community engagement with heritage will be imbedded within both of these functions and you will work closely with our Conservation Officers and numerous partners, including the Heritage Urban Regeneration Company, English Heritage, Bristol and Gloucestershire Archaeological Society, the Civic Trust, Neighbourhood partnerships and other groups from our diverse communities.

The successful candidate will have a good general knowledge of the historic environment of England, thorough experience of archaeological investigation techniques and filedwork, a detailed knowledge of how relevant legislation and guidance is applied to the historic environment, a good working knowledge of GIS and HERs (their applications, maintenance and development, preferably with experience of ESRI’s ARCView 9.2) and have experience of supporing community heritage projects.
