The Coroner’s Service is looking to recruit a part-time Coroner’s Officer. The hours to be worked will be 18.5 per week and will be discussed in detail at interview.
The successful applicant will work within a team of other Coroner’s Officers based in the Guildhall.
You will act as a first point of contact when a death is reported to the Coroner by health care professionals and will record, assess and investigate all deaths reported to the Coronial Service and initiate enquiries as appropriate. This will embrace evidence gathering, arranging for post mortem examinations and producing all the relevant paperwork for presentation to the Coroner to allow Death Registration to proceed and to allow for Inquests to be opened.
You will also need to provide accurate and timely information, support and guidance to bereaved families in a manner appropriate to their situation, race, gender and ethnicity in order to discharge your duties. You will need to liaise extensively with other organisations.
Essentially the role is to support the Coroner in the exercise of his statutory duty under the Coroners Act 1988.
The successful applicant will need to have experience in working with Police, Courts and medical services and the use of computers. Strong interpersonal skills are required to deal sympathetically with bereaved people. Good counselling and liaison skills are required, together with analytical skills and keyboard skills.
You will need to be able to deal with bereaved families who can often be upset.
