A vacancy has arisen due to a secondment for an Education Welfare Officer to work within Children’s Services with The Truancy team who jointly, with Surrey Police carry out truancy patrols throughout the County.

You will work with children from Women’s Domestic Abuse Refuges within the County, accessing an education provision and supporting them. The team have a countywide remit and work alongside the Locality teams within each Borough.

You should feel confident to carry out truancy patrols with police officers, be able to work under pressure and remain calm in stressful situations, whilst coping with confrontational and challenging situations.

It is essential that you are well-motivated and enthusiastic, committed to promoting school attendance, understand the factors which may contribute to truancy and disaffection, as well be able to complete family assessments.

Other responsibilities also include drawing up and implementing plans to secure full-time regular attendance, working within a multi-professional setting, as well as having a wide knowledge of education welfare and the legislation relating to school attendance.

You should be able to demonstrate the ability to acquire this knowledge, be empathetic and understanding and be able to work with children and families who have experienced domestic abuse.

Being a team player but also having the confidence and ability to plan and progress your own casework is essential, as is excellent communication and IT skills. You should be in possession of a full driving licence and use of your own car for business purposes. (Mileage allowance payable).

Evidence of a relevant professional qualification e.g. in social work or NVQ Level 4 or other related qualification/experience would be advantageous.
