New Directions – The Learning and Employment Service for Reading provides a range of learning and employment opportunities for adults of all ages in premises across the compass points of the borough. Courses in 10 different areas are delivered during day-time and evening hours and some Saturdays through the year.

We also offer NVQ training to individuals working in schools and industry through the government’s Train to Gain scheme, which aims to raise the skills levels of people in work. We currently deliver NVQs in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools, and ITQ. We hope to expand the offer in the near future to include Customer Service and Business Administration.

An experienced ESOL tutor is required to teach at various levels across the programme. This may include teaching at Outreach centres in addition to the four main New Directions sites. Applicants need to be familiar with the ESOL Skills for Life Strategy and, preferably, also Cambridge Skills for Life exams.

The post will include some non-teaching duties to be negotiated with the Line Manager. Depending on aptitude, experience and the requirements of the ESOL Delivery Area, these might include tasks such as the development of paper and electronic resources, mentoring, and involvement in staff training.

A Level 4/5 ESOL Subject Specialist Certificate and generic teaching qualification are required, or a commitment to becoming fully qualified.
