About the role
Here at Cancer Research UK, we deliver some of the country’s leading events including ‘Race for Life’ – the most successful ‘women only’ 5 km event, and ‘Shine’ – Cancer Research UK’s night-time marathon walk. As an Events Assistant, you will become an essential member of our vibrant Events team and gain some fantastic experience in all areas of event management.
In 2012, each region will have a dedicated team of Event Assistants who will support the Area Event Managers with the delivery of their events from May to September. We have positions available all over the UK and Scotland, with hours worked on a casual basis including weekends and evenings.

What’s in it for you?
You will gain experience in all aspects of events delivery including:
- Motivating and encouraging volunteers;
- Course management;
- Crowd control;
- Facilitating briefings;
- Ensuring all Cancer Research UK health and safety guidelines are met;
- Setting up and dismantling of event equipment.
You will have further opportunites to learn about the tools and methods used by our events team in the planning of the events by volunteering at site planning meetings, venue liaison meetings, health and safety and risk assessment planning meetings.
About you
If you are interested in applying you will need:
- Excellent interpersonal skills for building relationships;
- The ability to think logically and creatively;
- To be a strong organiser with the ability to multitask and prioritise your workload;
- Exceptional communication skills and the confidence and skills to manage large groups of volunteers;
- To be able to respond positively to new opportunities and challenges and be enthusiastic and proactive;
- To be a self-motivated, proactive team player who’s able to work on your own initiative and have a passion for event management;
- To hold a full and clean driving licence (this is not always essential).

Essential Criteria
- Eligible to work in the UK;
- Able to travel and work away from home;
- Able to carry out physical activity;
- Willing to work across Regional Events;
- Available on some weekends and evenings throughout May to September;
- Experience of leadership.
