Surrey County Council takes trading standards very seriously. We are committed to protecting the right of our community to buy products and services, confident that they won’t be ripped off or their wellbeing put in danger.

As our own in-house Legal Manager, you will play a crucial role in achieving that objective. This is a role that gives you the opportunity to combine the professional rewards of working for a large and influential Trading Standards Service with the chance to protect vulnerable members of the community.

Overseeing prosecutions and enforcement orders, you will provide legal advice, support and representation on a wide range of civil and criminal cases, leading the management of court proceedings and providing advocacy where necessary.

You will also ensure that our front-line Trading Standards Officers have the knowledge and understanding of the law they need to carry out their duties, planning and directing training as required.

This is a role that would suit a Trading Standards or legal professional with experience of enforcement and ideally having Civil rights of audience.

Either way, you will need extensive, detailed knowledge and experience of criminal and civil law, legal process and enforcement. Also important are good interpersonal and team skills. Assertive, enthusiastic and flexible, you must be capable of exhibiting the required evaluative, analytical and IT skills.

An enhanced Criminal Records Bureau disclosure check will be required for this role.

To find out more about the role, please telephone Lucy Corrie on 01372 371763 or Steve Ruddy on 01372 371730 or please visit www.surreycc.gov.uk/jobs

Interview dates 30 September and 1 October 2008. Those short-listed will be required to complete appropriate testing.

Surrey County Council is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
