Overview
Based in the London and South East Oxfam Campaigns office, the role involves writing news items, features, blog posts as well as producing and editing online video content and managing social networks with a central focus on Oxfam activities and campaigns.
As a media officer, you will use your journalism experience and skills to discover and amplify the voices of shop volunteers, activists, campaigners, partners and supporters who work with Oxfam every day to overcome poverty and suffering.
Reporting to the UK Regional Media Manager you will deliver media training as appropriate, lead on national media projects, deliver radio and TV interviews and liaise with journalists and media specialists. You will represent the organisation and work collaboratively with colleagues across various departments to make things happen.
Job Purpose:
- To develop and implement specific short and long term media strategies and products for the London & South East region
- To work closely with regional public engagement colleagues to build and maintain an active supporter base in the regions that is confident in using media channels to achieve change
- To work with specific media targets to deliver high value media coverage across the region
- To coordinate other media people in the UK and liaise with the media unit on UK wide media issues & strategies
- To provide specialist media knowledge and experience to colleagues and supporters in the South East
- To work with regional colleagues to deliver media training to new and existing supporters.
- To work closely with the UK Public Affairs Manager and colleagues to ensure a high standard and effective programme of media and activism.
- To promote Oxfam’s shops, development, emergency and fundraising work.
- To build, maintain and protect Oxfam’s reputation through proactive and reactive media work.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide specialist media advice, training, and support to staff team and supporters, in using media effectively and proactively to achieve campaign and wider corporate communications’ objectives.
- Build staff, supporters’ and key partners’ capacity and where appropriate, celebrities to use media effectively to deliver Oxfam’s messages.
- Building and maintaining a contact list of journalists/broadcasters to further Oxfam’s media coverage in local and regional media.
- Lead the relationship building process between media activists and local media (print, electronic and broadcast) in co-operation with the media unit (based in Oxford) and Regional Media Manager
- Coordinate promotion of fundraising, development and emergency media work in cooperation with the media unit, regional team members and regional media manager.
- Contribute to the inception, development and delivery of regional and national campaigns, media strategies and stand alone online media products
- Take part in regular media coordination meetings with other regional and national media colleagues and the media unit.
- Ensure effective monitoring of results and impact of media work.
- Act as a spokesperson for Oxfam on a wide range of issues where necessary.
- Ensure effective cross department use of the media.

Other:
- There will be a requirement for some out of hours and weekend work.
