“An excellent opportunity to develop a career in one of the most dynamic and challenging areas of local government in a local authority that is regarded as an example of best practice in scrutiny”
Maidstone has developed a national reputation for innovation and best practice in this area. We are looking to recruit an ambitious and enthusiastic individual to compliment the scrutiny team and build on our successes in scrutiny. Your work will involve background research into topics as wide and varied as road safety, diverse communities, health and the Olympics. Politically aware, you will have a key role supporting committees in their work on policy development and holding the Cabinet to account. Using the skills gained during your degree or work experience you will be producing reports and briefing materials for Councillors. This is a demanding position working in a high-profile political environment. You will need to be able to grasp new ideas quickly and be confident in identifying, gathering and analysing a wide range of information. Part of a hardworking and professional team, you will have excellent research and IT skills and highly developed interpersonal and communication skills. As the committees cover the full range of the Council’s services, policies and work with partners, you will need to liaise with colleagues at senior levels both inside and outside the Council. You will be enthusiastic, flexible and creative and have the ability to tackle a wide range of tasks – often to tight deadlines – with minimal supervision. The post will involve evening meetings (for which overtime will be paid).
As this post is a career grade even if you do not meet all of these criteria but want to work in such a role, we would like to hear from you. For the right candidate we can develop a training package that will equip you with the skills you need.
For an informal discussion about this post, please contact Angela Woodhouse, Head of Change and Scrutiny, on (01622) 602620.
