The Training Schools Programme is jointly delivered by the DCSF and the TDA. The DCSF is the policy lead, and the TDA is responsible for delivery and support. The TDA currently supports Training Schools through individual school visits; local networks; the exchange of practice; advice on self-evaluation; an annual review and conferences.

However, this support will need to be adapted to reflect the changing role and expanding remit of Training Schools. In particular, the consultant will be required to respond to the growing need to raise the profile of the programme and to work more strategically across multiple partners and agencies. Of particular importance in achieving this aim will be the cultivation of strong links between Training Schools and Local Authorities. This will require the consultant to spend a significant amount of time meeting and developing work with others.

The consultant will be required to work with approximately 60 Training Schools in London and the SE. Numbers will fluctuate due to the fact that the numbers of schools leaving and joining the programme are not consistent. The schools the consultant will be expected to work with will be primarily located in the Government Office for London but may also be located in the Government Office for the South East. The consultant will be expected to deliver the following areas of activity:
- Implement annual reviews (with the Training Schools)
- Induct new Training Schools to the programme
- Manage and attend network Meetings
- Provide annual visit to schools encountering difficulties or changes in key personnel
- Provide advice & Guidance to potential training Schools
- Provide strategic leadership for Training schools

The successful candidate will:
- Have an understanding of how training and development contributes to school improvement e.g. where you have worked in or with schools to develop training and development practice
- Make and maintain excellent relationships with others. e.g. experience of working with other agencies/institutions
- Negotiate and influence, particularly with the sensitivity of others in mind
- Demonstrate confidence in and understanding of relevant educational polices that affect Training Schools. e.g. how a Training School operates, the high performing specialist schools criteria, Every Child Matters agenda, Extended Schools agenda, The Children’s Plan etc
- Demonstrate relevant skills and experience of challenging schools to develop their work. e.g. helping schools to self-evaluate, to target-set, strategies for effective outreach and dissemination
- Demonstrate an ability to identify and offer solutions to problems and be creative and innovative in the approach to problem solving
- Demonstrate excellent communication, ICT and presentational skills
- Demonstrate an ability to meet key deliverables and objectives

The closing date for this post is 31st January 2009.
The position is available on a fixed-term contract until the end of 2010, due to start on 27th March 2009.
The successful postholder will be required to work approximately 140 days during 2009 and 200 days in 2010 during term time, meaning holidays must be taken within school holidays.
