Following a recent reorganisation of Directorates and services, this is a newly created post covering three of the smaller Council Directorates. We are seeking to appoint a Health and Safety Coordinator to develop the health and safety management system across these Directorates. Are you self-confident with a ‘can-do’ personality? The position will be based within the Council’s Corporate Health & Safety and Civil Protection Unit. Your primary role will be taking responsibility for the ongoing and continued development of the health and safety management system within the Chief Executives / Resources and the Development & Renewal Directorates closely working in conjunction with Service Heads in these Directorates who have a lead management responsibility for health and safety. You will have specific responsibility for designing, drafting, developing and monitoring the implementation of Directorate specific health and safety policies, safe working procedures and guidance. You will seek to develop the role in an ever-changing and complex local authority environment.

You will also assist with advising senior managers with the implementation of effective health and safety risk assessment systems. This will include directly undertaking complex risk-assessments, including those required under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

You should be self-motivated and have excellent communication, inter-personal and organisational skills. You should have a flexible attitude to your work, experience of working in a team and also on your own initiative. You must also hold a driving licence and have a car available to carry out your duties.

As well as having an excellent knowledge and understanding of health and safety, you will also have the following relevant qualifications:

• Substantial relevant experience

• Ideally you will have already achieved Chartered Membership of IOSH, having achieved either the NEBOSH diploma Part 2 or NVQ 4 in health and safety. As a minimum, you must have already achieved Tech IOSH status via examination, having achieved the NEBOSH diploma part 1, NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management or NEBOSH Construction Certificate.

• Experience of undertaking fire safety inspections and assessments (as required under the Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order 2005) with relevant experience and a recognised qualification in the fire safety field. Applicants with part qualifications will also be considered.
