There is an exciting opportunity to work at the heart of Elmbridge Borough Council, supporting front line services and helping to deliver the Council’s vision and priorities. We are looking to appoint a dynamic and enthusiastic individual with proven post qualification experience in local government to be the Head of Legal Services based at the Civic Centre in Esher, Surrey.
You will need to be a solicitor or barrister, and a confident and self-motivated person so as to be able to lead a small team of lawyers within the Legal Division that has enjoyed Lexcel accreditation for a number of years. You will be a senior manager with a solid track record of achievement and a corporate player, credible with members and officers alike.
The ability to communicate clearly and decisively at all levels is an essential ingredient for this post, which will involve a wide-ranging responsibility for legal and corporate matters affecting the Council, including the Land Charges Section. You will also act as the Council’s Monitoring Officer, requiring an in-depth knowledge of the Code of Conduct for Members and be able to offer high quality advice to elected members, the management board and officers on a diverse range of legal and corporate matters, including those relating to statutory and constitutional issues. The Head of Legal Services will have to attend evening meetings of full Council, the Cabinet and some Committees.
