Job summary
The Government Actuary’s Department (GAD) provides actuarial advice and analysis to support Government objectives. Our remit covers advice and support to national government, devolved administrations and local authorities. Our team comprises highly skilled actuaries and analysts, complemented by specialist pension, investment and climate consultants. Together, we collaborate to deliver innovative solutions tailored to our clients' needs. With offices strategically located in London and Edinburgh, we prioritise proximity to our clients, fostering strong, collaborative relationships across our diverse client base.
You will be a member of the Analytical Solutions Team (AST), working on defined benefit pension schemes. Our vision is to be a trusted centre of analytical excellence, delivering integrated, innovative, and insightful solutions to empower our client-facing teams to provide robust, evidence-based advice. We set the benchmark for analytical excellence, supporting confident decisions and lasting value for our clients.
Job description
Main areas of work may include, but are not necessarily limited to the following in relation to defined benefit pension schemes:
- Actuarial valuations
- Pension scheme accounting under IAS19
- Funding updates between formal actuarial valuations
- Calculation of actuarial factors for member options
- Complex member benefit calculations
This is not an exhaustive list and changes may be required based on GAD’s immediate operational needs which are at the discretion of the relevant Unit Director and in conjunction with the post holder.
There is also potential opportunity to do some work in other areas, such as insurance, investment, climate & disaster risk and more as your role at GAD develops.
Person specification
- Detailed knowledge of actuarial calculations underlying valuations, with the following aspects desirable:
- schemes open to new accrual with active members
- career average salary schemes
- Ability to both check work at a detailed level and carry out high level reviews.
- Experience of using Mantle (a 3rd party pension valuation system we use) is desirable. Else a strong interest in learning a new system is required.
- Ability to manage projects to an agreed budget and timescales, liaising closely with the other teams.
- Ability to train junior team members in all work areas.

There are likely to be follow-up questions on the Behaviours below leading on from the presentation to ensure the panel gain a rounded picture.
