Your world of expertise

Our Industrial Placement scheme offers ambitious and capable undergraduates the opportunity to gain valuable experience working alongside diverse and highly skilled experts in their field. You’ll be working on projects that really matter and will make a difference.

Our Industrial Placement scheme gives undergraduates valuable experience working with experts in their field. You will join the Ocean Modelling team within the Ocean, Cryosphere and Climate (OCC) group at the Met Office Hadley Centre. The team delivers ocean modelling capability that underpins the Met Office's coupled weather and climate prediction systems and advances understanding of the ocean's role in climate variability. The group's work spans global, regional and polar marine environments and involves collaboration with national and international partners. The team works with the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) through the Joint Marine Modelling Programme and contributes to the NEMO community ocean model.

This placement offers an opportunity to explore how data-driven approaches could improve the representation of ocean vertical mixing. Vertical mixing influences ocean stratification and circulation, both of which are important for reliable climate projections, but it is often represented using simplified parametrisations. While machine learning has been applied successfully to the parametrisation of mesoscale eddies, its use for vertical mixing remains limited. You will develop skills in ocean science and machine learning while contributing to improvements in ocean model accuracy and reliability.

Your key duties

  • Review literature on recent developments in machine-learning approaches to ocean vertical mixing to understand current limitations.
  • Select and process suitable training datasets for use in ML.
  • Develop and evaluate a data-driven approach to represent or improve aspects of ocean vertical mixing.
  • Assess the performance and validity of the approach using independent data and/or simplified numerical experiments.
  • Analyse, document and communicate the results, including limitations and recommendations for future research.

Why join us

Our work is life-changing, often life-saving and always life-enhancing. The Met Office is Great Place to Work UK certified. We are also featured on their ‘Best Workplaces in Tech’ 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026 lists, as well as their ’54 Best Workplaces for Women’ 2023 list.

Your package includes:

  • Your salary will be £27,170
  • Annual Leave starting at 27.5 days
  • Access to discounted shopping, inclusive of retail, leisure and lifestyle brands

Whilst this is a temporary position until July 2028, there may be an opportunity to apply for our Graduate Development scheme upon completion of your university studies. However, this is not guaranteed and would be subject to programme availability and a successful application.

Essential Criteria, skills and experience:

  • Lead Criteria: Experience with programming or scientific computing tools such as Fortran, Python, or MATLAB, showing a commitment to continuous learning and technological development.
  • Studying for a degree in a mathematical or physical science, with an industrial placement year included
  • A clear interest in AI and machine learning, with a strong motivation to build skills in this area (Keep Evolving).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to communicate technical ideas clearly and concisely in writing and in small-group discussions (Better Together).
  • The panel may perform a preliminary sift of the lead criteria as indicated above.
