Job summary
The Ministry of Defence employs over 50,000 Civil Servants. Within that, with responsibility for an annual budget of over £10bn, the Army is a major part of the Ministry of Defence and one of its largest operating centres who employ around 12,000 Civil Servants located at over 300 locations supporting the 110K regular and reserve soldiers across the Army. This Civil Service workforce is diverse, with many different functions and professions ranging from police officers, security guards, trainers, human resources, teachers, and psychologists to storekeepers, financiers, project and programme managers, and policy secretariat staff.
The Army Foundation College Harrogate trains all Junior Soldiers under the age of 18 and prepares them for their subsequent Phase 2 Training. A Junior Soldier will complete either a 6 month or 12 month course within an exciting and challenging course programme, including military skills, education, adventure training and life skills.
We employ a large work force comprising of military staff, contractors and civil servants. Military and civilian personnel create an exciting and diverse work environment, always working to a “One Team” ethos, supporting, and learning from one another.
We are looking to recruit a dynamic, organised and enthusiastic General Practitioner (GP) working within our Primary and Occupational Healthcare team.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
Job description
To provide primary and occupational Healthcare in line with General Medical Council (GMC) Standards to ensure that the organisational and Senior Medical Officer's objectives are achieved to optimise patient care.
The General Practitioner should understand the values and standards of the Armed Forces and support the Services in their day-to-day duty.Key responsibilities:
- Provide general healthcare to all registered patients during normal practice hours.
- Maximise the levels of health, wellbeing and employability of Service personnel to ensure the needs of the single Services are met.
- Undertake mandatory medical examinations and provide appropriate occupational healthcare and advice, and all supporting administrative duties.
- Provide appropriate preventative medical advice to both individuals and Chain of Command.
- Appropriately supervise the management of communicable diseases, including monitoring and reporting through single Service chains.
- Provide primary care emergency treatment to any patient who may require this within the Establishment.
- Have a working knowledge of and be actively involved in clinical governance.
- Participate in audit, in accordance with both personal and practice development plans.
- Work in collaboration with all members of the primary healthcare team and line management.
- Represent the Senior Medical Officers on Medical Practice related issues where necessary, including participation in Commander’s Monthly Case Review (unit health committee) where appropriate.
- Participate fully in any practice out of hours rota, but where applicable the level of commitment being based on a pro-rata basis for part-time staff. This should not include providing cover for planned military absences.
- Provide care for inpatients of any low dependency ward where applicable.
- Provide emergency treatment and accident reporting for MOD civilian staff.
- Be familiar with relevant major incident and infectious disease outbreak plans.
- Liaise with the practice manager on all matters of service administration.

Essential skills required:- Registration with the United Kingdom General Medical Council (GMC), and on the General Practitioner (GP) Register.
- Applicants should have received a Certificate of Completion of Training following General Practice Specialist Training.
- Full GMC Registration and a Licence to Practice.
- To be proficient with electronic patient records.
Desirable skills:
Knowledge of
- Medical IT systems used within the Defence Medical Services.
- Occupational health and in particular military occupational health.
- Musculoskeletal medicine.
- Proficiency in DMICP.
