The South Thames Gateway Building Control Partnership is a Local Authority partnership combining the building control services of four Local Authorities (LA) within Kent. This combined skills and talent has created a forward thinking, progressive building control team.

We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic, motivated team player who is willing to commit to a career in Local Authority Building Control and undertake a varied range of technical tasks. Our assistant surveyors will recognise that this is a career opportunity with a structured training programme equipping them with the qualifications and skills that will support them throughout their career in the construction industry. The Role


You will be part of a team that delivers the building control services for Canterbury, Gravesham, Medway, and Swale councils and required to work across any of these areas.

Our Assistant Building Control Surveyors will undertake a training programme which is partly based in the office on site working and learning alongside experienced surveyors. You will be able to work flexibly and maintain a good work-life balance. We have a high standard of values and looking for people who believe in and share those values. Your main responsibilities will include:

Supporting the operations team to gain a comprehensive understanding of the building control process.

Working with experienced surveyors and supporting them with all building control activities including plans checking and site inspection work

Actively managing your own career development to work towards qualification

Throughout your training you’ll earn a competitive salary and on completion you’ll have the skills, qualifications and experience required to become a Registered Building Inspector as well as the opportunity to progress to become a fully qualified Chartered Surveyor or Building Engineer.

Please note – This role will require regular travel to sites. Therefore, you will need a full driving licence

Career Progression Frameworks (CPF) have been introduced for all roles at Medway Council. These frameworks provide a mechanism for employees to take ownership of their development within their post and be rewarded accordingly. The salary you will be offered will be at level A. There will be further opportunity once in post to progress from level A to B, and B to C.

The person specification of a job profile is split into three levels:

Level A details the essential criteria that all applicants must be able to demonstrate through their application and interview.

Level B details the developed competencies that an individual who is practised in this role would be able to demonstrate and will be a progression of knowledge, experience and skills from level A.

Level C requires the highest level of competence and applicants would need to fully meet and demonstrate all aspects of the job profile, including qualifications, knowledge, skills and experience.

We are seeking to appoint an Assistant Building Control Surveyor. You will be required to demonstrate knowledge, experience and skills to allow you to perform within this role. You will identify, through application, how you meet the elements detailed within the person specification, at either Level A, B or C. You will be supported to develop in your role through induction, probation and a supportive Performance Appraisal and Career Conversation. Through your induction you will be introduced to the Career Progression Framework (CPF), which will help you to identify your areas of strength and any development needs.
