We are looking for an Assistant Highway Maintenance Engineer to support the delivery of highway maintenance and major capital investment programmes across the district. Working within the Highway Design & Delivery Team, you will assist with project management, scheme development, contract delivery and technical design to help maintain and improve Wakefield’s highway network for residents, businesses and visitors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the planning and delivery of highway maintenance and capital investment programmes.
  • Undertake site inspections and assess appropriate maintenance treatments and engineering solutions.
  • Assist with scheme development, option appraisals, technical drawings and design work.
  • Monitor contractor performance, programme delivery and project expenditure.
  • Support coordination of highway works to minimise disruption to road users.
  • Assist with contract administration, payment verification and scheme record management.
  • Liaise with contractors, elected members, stakeholders and members of the public on highway projects and maintenance activities.
  • Help deliver projects safely, on time and within budget.

What will be expected from me?

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, contractors and stakeholders to deliver highway improvement schemes.
  • Provide technical advice and practical solutions to highway maintenance issues.
  • Maintain accurate project records, reports and financial information.
  • Communicate effectively with residents, councillors and partner organisations.
  • Manage workloads to meet deadlines and programme requirements.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to customer service, continuous improvement and professional development.
  • Undertake site visits and ensure safe working practices are followed at all times.

Essential requirements:

  • HND in Civil Engineering (or equivalent) or the ability to demonstrate equivalent technical knowledge and experience.
  • Relevant experience in highway maintenance, construction or civil engineering projects.
  • Understanding of highway construction, maintenance and project delivery processes.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with colleagues, contractors and stakeholders.
  • Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office applications.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team while meeting project deadlines.
