About the team
Whilst the primary focus of the Team is the administration of the Teachers’ Pensions scheme, the Team also acts as the initial point of contact for technical queries on the other pension schemes available to HCC staff.
The world of pensions is a constantly changing one and is increasingly technical in nature. Members of the Team need to be familiar with the increasingly complex frameworks pensions operate within.
Employees are understandably sensitive and often anxious around the administration of their pension schemes. The Team plays a valuable role in re-assuring those employees of the processes involved and the choices available to them.
About the role
Whilst some knowledge of Teachers’ Pensions Regulations would be advantageous, attention to detail and a thorough approach to managing casework are key requirements of the post.
Pension schemes operate within a statutory framework and the postholder will need to be able to demonstrate the ability to follow procedural documents.
The postholder will need to work to investigate and resolve instances where members, employers or the Scheme administrators have raised concerns and communicate the steps taken to reach resolution.
The ability to clearly set out options available to members whilst recognising the difference between ‘guidance’ and ‘advice’ is an important aspect of the role.
This is a hybrid working role with the postholder mainly working from home with a requirement that the member of staff be available to attend meetings etc one day a week in the Stevenage office.
About you
Essential:
- Attention to detail.
- Ability to follow procedures accurately.
- Good numeracy skills
- Ability to explain potentially complex issues to members along with the implications of the decisions they make.
Desirable:
- An understanding of occupational pension schemes
- Familiarity with Teachers’ Pay & Conditions
- Familiarity with Office applications including Word, Excel and Teams.
Pensions can be an intimidating subject for members unfamiliar with their options and entitlements under the Scheme.
Colleagues who have been provided with re-assurance and clarification on their pension entitlements will often express their gratitude for the help and support provided as they approach retirement or when starting in a new role and needing to understand the implications of complex and important decisions making the role a rewarding one.
