Luton Council is seeking a skilled and motivated Assistant Mechanical Engineer to join our friendly and forward-thinking Design & Maintenance Team.
Working under the guidance of the Principal Services Engineer and Project Design Manager, you’ll play a vital role in delivering high-quality mechanical design services for a diverse range of projects, from modernising schools to upgrading public buildings. This is an exciting opportunity to make a tangible impact on the community while developing your expertise in a collaborative and supportive environment.
What you’ll be doing:
- Providing professional advice and delivering a wide range of mechanical services design for new developments and refurbishments.
- Producing technical drawings using AutoCAD and/or Revit-based software.
- Carrying out mechanical design calculations, including using software such as Stabicad, IES, or Hevacomp.
- Writing clear, concise technical reports to inform project decisions.
- Planning, prioritising, and managing your workload to meet deadlines and fee targets.
- Collaborating with internal colleagues and external consultants to meet technical, financial, and legislative requirements.
- Conducting site visits, including accessing all areas of building sites using ladders or scaffolding when required.

About you
What we’re looking for:
- A relevant professional qualification (HNC or equivalent) or demonstrable equivalent work-based experience and training.
- Strong working knowledge of relevant legislation and statutory requirements, including CDM regulations, building regulations, asbestos regulations, and IEE regulations.
- The ability to create and maintain strong working relationships, consult effectively, and influence outcomes.
- Understanding and commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace.
- Confident use of mechanical design software and CAD/Revit tools.
- Excellent organisational skills to balance conflicting priorities.
