Could you help shape a curriculum that inspires young minds and supports teachers to achieve great things together? Lift Broadlands is looking for a Head of English who cares about excellent education and wants to make a real difference in every classroom, every day.

Your new school
Lift Broadlands is a small secondary school in Keynsham, fostering a nurturing environment for students aged 11-16 and led by an incredible Principal, Laura Stone, who is passionate about ensuring that every student has access to an excellent education, in every classroom, every day. We're conveniently located near Bath and North East Somerset, with excellent transport links to Bristol and other surrounding areas. We are a small, mixed, fully inclusive comprehensive school and remain one of the best choices for learning in the area. For every student who attends our academy, we aim to raise their aspirations, broaden their horizons and promote a life-long love of learning. We are an OFSTED ‘Good' school, and benefit from a number of links with the local community and have an excellent reputation.

About the role
Lift Schools have decided to tie our ambition to a concrete goal: 490. What does 490 signify? It means that by 2028, we want 90% of our GCSE pupils to be scoring grade 4 or above in English and maths. You will play a pivotal role in Lift Broadlands achieving this target, leading a team of 4 English teachers, including an ITT (Ark Teacher Training) to continue achieving high quality GCSE outcomes that change lives for all of our students, but especially the most vulnerable.

You'll guide your department with a clear vision, supporting teachers to grow and ensuring students receive engaging, knowledge-rich learning. You'll design a curriculum that's ambitious and carefully planned, and you'll create a positive environment where every child can succeed. What role could you play in shaping that future?

Key responsibilities

  • Sit on the Senior Leadership Team and take responsibility for a whole school remit beyond that of English
  • Set a clear vision for your department and build a strong sense of purpose and identity
  • Support and coach staff through appraisals, training and regular feedback
  • Design and review a broad, engaging curriculum aligned with national standards
  • Use assessment and data to understand student progress and guide teaching improvements
  • Work closely with colleagues across departments to create a connected learning experience
  • Build positive relationships with students, parents and staff, promoting respect and high expectations

We are looking for someone who
You'll have Qualified Teacher Status and a degree in your subject area. You'll have proven experience as an excellent classroom teacher with a track record of helping students achieve strong results. Can you communicate clearly, support others to develop, and stay calm under pressure?

You'll understand how to use assessment to inform planning and how to create a welcoming, inclusive classroom. You'll care about safeguarding, equality and ongoing learning. Are you someone who reflects thoughtfully on your own practice and is open to new ideas?
