Job summary

The Mycology Reference Laboratory provides a comprehensive service for the diagnosis and management of fungal infections through its specialist laboratory services and expert clinical and technical advice. They organise regular training courses on the identification of pathogenic fungi and houses the national collection of pathogenic fungi (NCPF), which is the only culture collection in the UK specialising in fungi pathogenic to humans and animals.

We are looking for an Associate Practitioner to work in the Mycology Reference Laboratory who will provide a professional clinical laboratory service working effectively as a team member.

They will perform a range of healthcare science clinical technical activities under supervision, including testing patient/audit samples and research work, as appropriate to the training and qualifications of a Healthcare Scientist Associate Practitioner.

They will maintain records in relation to laboratory activities and will be required to supervise, organise and allocate work and/or train less experienced staff in their own area. They will also develop and improve their own professional expertise.

The Associate Practitioner will also be expected to assist in any UKHSA co-ordinated response or activity of a national/international nature e.g. Bioterrorism incident or major disease outbreak.

Job description

  • Participate in provision of a diagnostic service, producing reliable, relevant and reproducible results.
  • Under supervision, undertake analysis of patient samples in accordance with lab protocols/procedures ensuring the validity of test results using quality management system.
  • Follow routine procedures for the calibration/maintenance of lab equipment and be responsible for completion of checklists for equipment and work areas.
  • Maintain records for all mycological analysis and supporting procedures including records for all reagents prepared in-house as part of Quality Control procedures.
  • Assist BMS’s where appropriate, plan their day’s work and those they supervise and propose relevant changes to work areas as required.
  • Prepare/dispatch items to other departments as appropriate.
  • Perform clerical duties including computer entry of lab data.
  • Participate in research and/or development work in collaboration with senior staff as required.
  • Assist with provision of samples for projects undertaken by the MRL including maintenance of inventories of stored specimens and recording of specimens used in individual projects.
  • Where appropriate, be responsible for instructing/training HSSW staff within the MRL.
  • Maintain personal development and relevant core competencies through further study and attendance at appropriate courses and meetings as required and participate in internal and external teaching and training programmes.
  • Undertake a structured training programme to successfully acquire core competencies outlined in competency training manual and maintain required standards of competence when undertaking duties.
  • Assist in maintenance of safety checks and working to Control of Substances Hazardous to Health regulations.

Responsible for Finance & Physical Resources

  • Replace stocks of consumables and reagents when required and inform the section leader if back-up stocks are low.
  • Assist in use and maintenance of equipment, following manufacturer’s guidelines and training/assisting in troubleshooting when equipment problems occur.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Healthcare Scientist Support Worker (HSSW) and other support staff.

Other Duties

  • Undertake any reasonable task delegated by a senior member of staff.
  • Use equipment and perform duties in a safe and responsible manner.

Other

  • There is a need to concentrate for long periods of time at technically demanding procedures.
  • Strenuous physical effort is rarely required.

Eligibility Criteria

Salary Information

Grade: Administrative Officer (AO):
AO National minimum: £25,651 per annum, pro rata
AO National maximum: £27,220 per annum, pro rata

There is a Market Pay Supplement attached to this role to bring the salary up to a minimum of £28, 164 until 31/03/2027.

If you are successful at interview, and are moving from another government department, NHS, or Local Authority, the relevant starting salary principles for level transfers or promotions will apply. Otherwise, roles are offered at the pay scale minimum for the grade, but in exceptional circumstances there may be flexibility if you are able to demonstrate you are already in receipt of an existing, higher salary. Pay increases are through the relevant annual pay award for the role and terms.

This role is being offered based at Southmead Hospital, Southmead, Bristol BS10 5NB.

Security Clearance Level

Successful candidates must pass a basic disclosure and barring security check before they can be appointed.
