Job summary

The Civilian Occupational Health Nurse plays a vital role within the Department of Occupational Medicine, providing expert occupational health guidance to RAF Recruitment & Selection. Working autonomously within professional competence, the post holder delivers clinical assessments, advises on candidate medical fitness, supports appeals and reviews, and contributes to ministerial correspondence. The role also includes advising on medical risks for candidates considered for executive medical waivers and supporting continuous improvement of departmental policy and clinical standards.

Job description

Key Responsibilities

  • Within your area of competence and specialist qualification, provide advice to RAF Recruitment & Selection on the occupational aspects of recruiting.
  • Provide advice to the Contractor staff on the Medical Fitness of candidates referred by them.
  • Provide response to appeals by candidates against decisions made on Medical Fitness.
  • Contributing to the medical elements of responses to ministerial correspondence, enquiries, appeals, medical change of circumstances, branch/trade reviews for potential candidates utilising current policy and department guidelines.
  • Advice to the Executive on medical risks in those candidates who do not meet normal entry standards but are being considered for executive waiver of medical standards.
  • Contribute to service and policy improvement initiatives.
  • Liaise with other MOD or external agencies in support of department and recruiting objectives.
  • Work autonomously and where appropriate refer to, or seek support and guidance, in more complex occupational health issues from a relevant clinician as required.
  • Participate in clinical supervision and provide other Nurse and Midwifery Council (NMC) registered professionals with support towards revalidation.
  • Specific responsibility for supporting clinical assessment activities of the department providing immediate support to boarding staff with clinical investigation of candidates (eg. taking bloods and ECG’s), clinical guidelines/protocols and standards and review of blood results.
  • Assisting with the professional, personal training and development of the DOM staffs, relating to, clinical and medical activities.

This is a Fixed-term Appointment as a Occupational Health Nurse in the Recruiting and Selection Department Of Occupational Medicine. Your responsibilities will be as described in this job advert. The reason why you are appointed for a fixed period is due approved funding. This post will therefore begin on your appointment and end 23 months after that date. You should be aware that when your Fixed-term Appointment at MOD comes to an end, arrangements will be made in line with the FTA policy.

If you are a permanent MOD civil servant and are found successful for an advertised Fixed-term Appointment (FTA) you should move into the post under a Temporary Transfer (for up to a maximum of 3 years). At the end of the posting, you will return to your previous MOD Business area. If this posting is at a higher grade, your promotion will be temporary, and you will return to your substantive grade at the end of the Temporary Transfer. If a Temporary Transfer cannot be agreed between all parties, then a transfer on an FTA contract is possible, read the FTA and Change of Work Location in the UK policy for further information.

If you are transferring to MOD from another government department (OGD) you should join the MoD on an inward loan. At the end of the loan, you will return to your home (OGD) department. Experience

  • Appropriate clinical skills and experience to provide medical oversight of other staff.
  • A proven history of working collaboratively within teams.

Desirable

  • Previous Ministry of Defence (MOD) Experience working as a general nurse or specialist occupational health nurse.

Membership

  • Registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
  • Proof of NMC validation and revalidation required at interview.

  • A qualification in Occupational Health
