The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is responsible for welfare, pensions and child maintenance policy and is responsible for helping people move into employment, supporting pensioners and protecting some of the most vulnerable in our society.

We at the DWP are committed to making our workforce reflect the communities we serve and as such we are looking to add to our existing network of Welsh Speaking colleagues, by recruiting a Bilingual (Welsh/English) Work Coach in Llandrindod Wells and Welshpool.

As a bilingual (Welsh/English) Work Coach you will play a key role in making a real difference to people’s lives, particularly our Welsh speaking customers by supporting them to access DWP services.

Job description

Your role will include

  • Having a caseload of customers for whom you will be responsible.
  • Building positive relationships with your customers that encourage and motivate them to make the most of their work and earnings potential and become financially independent.
  • Offering advice and support to help your customers to look for work and where necessary support them to develop skills to be successful in their job search in a digital environment. i.e. job search websites, email, uploading documents etc.
  • Undertaking face to face, digital and phone discussions with customers on a daily basis, in both Welsh or English.
  • Proactively developing an in-depth knowledge of the local labour market, recognising the roles that our Partners and Employers have in helping our customers secure employment.
  • Making timely decisions, based on the needs of the customer, to refer them to appropriate support.

This role is an office based, customer facing position in Llandrindod Wells and Welshpool Jobcentres.

Hybrid working will not be considered at this time.

To be successful you will need to

  • Be able to speak and understand spoken Welsh (Essential Criteria). Written Welsh will be limited to writing brief notes or messages.
  • Communicate well with a diverse group of customers, partners and employers with the ultimate aim of supporting people into work. (Lead Criteria);

Languages

Standard of Spoken Welsh– Candidates should be able to converse clearly and understand spoken Welsh to:

  • Discuss customers personal circumstances, work history and explore job goals
  • Explain benefits rules, requirements and decisions
  • Understand customers questions and be able to respond.

Standard of Written Welsh -

  • Written Welsh will be limited to writing brief notes or messages to your customers by email, text, etc.

Languages

Be able to speak and understand spoken Welsh

Selection process details

This vacancy is using Success Profiles (opens in a new window), and will assess your Behaviours and Strengths.

Stage 1 – Apply

To apply we ask you to provide evidence using one behaviour which will comprise of 250 words at Level 2 on Communicating and Influencing.

Please note depending on the volume of applications we may choose to proceed straight to interview and dispense with the sift stage. For this reason, the timeline is subject to change depending on the approach we chose to take.

Your evidence can be written in either Welsh or English.

Successful applicants at the sift stage will be invited to interview.

Stage 2 – Interview

The interview will last approximately 30 minutes. This will be a blended interview and will consist of three strength and three behaviour based questions based on the three behaviours listed above.

The interviewwill be conducted in Welsh to ensure you can speak and understand conversational Welsh.

Please note that interviews will be via video using Microsoft Teams and you will need to use your personal or work device to access the video link. You will receive a link to join the interview at the appointed time through the email account you provide us with on your application.

Communications will be electronic and/or by telephone therefore it is vitally important that you check your Civil Service Jobs account regularly, as well as your spam/junk email folder. Telephone calls may show as a withheld number, it is important that you answer so that your interview can be confirmed.

Sift and interview dates:

Sift - Will take place between 10/02/26 to 11/02/26
Interviews - Will take place between 23/02/26 to 24/02/26

The above sift and interview dates may change depending on the numbers involved; however, candidates invited to interview will be given at least three working days’ notice.

Working Pattern

The full-time working week in DWP is 37 hours. You may be required to work at any time between the hours of:

  • 7:45am and 8:00pm on any day between Monday to Friday, and
  • 8:45am to 5:00pm on Saturday

DWP is a family-friendly employer and we try to accommodate the widest range of working patterns, including part-time and job-sharing, but we cannot guarantee doing so because our ability to deliver our business locally must always be taken into account.

Training Requirements

You may be required to undertake training which is necessary for you to perform your role. This will be provided by the Department for Work and Pensions at no cost to you. Every effort will be made to arrange for training to be held during your agreed normal working hours.

Exceptionally, where this is not possible, you will need to be prepared to adjust your normal hours to attend for training and pay will be adjusted accordingly. In these circumstances you will be given details of your revised times of attendance for the period of the training event by management. Time off in lieu may be taken as an alternative to payment at the discretion of your manager and subject to the needs of the work where appropriate.

DWP takes development seriously. Our aim is for our colleagues in these roles to be appropriately skilled and qualified – as determined by the business. To support this aim you may be required to undertake a work based qualification, which may be in the form of an apprenticeship, which will support you in further developing your professional knowledge and skills for this role and your future career development. The qualification can be undertaken in work time, you agree to take this job on the basis that you may be required to undertake a work based qualification; a candidate’s failure to participate fully in the professional programme, once appointed, may be a breach of their employment contract.
