About the Service and Team

As a Building Control Surveyor, you’ll be a key member of Kingston’s Building Control team, working under the guidance of the Head of Building Control to ensure safe, high-quality development across the borough. You’ll support the day-to-day delivery and ongoing improvement of the service, applying and enforcing Building Regulations, sharing specialist advice, and promoting best practice. Your work will help the team deliver consistent, high standards and achieve the best outcomes for our communities.

Building Control forms part of the Councils Planning and Regeneration function comprising, Development Management, Spatial Planning, Infrastructure Planning and Delivery, High Street Recovery and Employment and Skills. Planning and Regeneration is part of the Place Directorate and works alongside Housing, Highways and Regulatory Services, Property and Projects, Cambridge Road Estate Regeneration. We work cohesively across the breath of Place and across other service areas of the Council. Currently alongside the wider domestic and commercial building control applications, the team is working on three major council applications, the New Leisure Centre, Cambridge Road Estate Regeneration and Murray House, a 45 unit later living and supported accommodation scheme.

About the Role and Our Ideal Candidate

We are in the process of updating our pay scales in line with the pay award for NJC, Chief Officers and Chief Executives for April 2025, therefore please take this into account when viewing the salary on this position. The new salary for this role is £55,323 - £60,573 per annum (inclusive of the 2025 pay award, effective immediately).

Help shape safe, sustainable, and inspiring places for the people of Kingston. From our historic riverside and lively market town to new homes and community spaces, you’ll be our technical expert, providing specialist advice and guidance on complex building control matters.

In addition, you will:

  • Check plans and carry out site inspections on a range of projects, including high-rise and specialist fire engineering schemes.
  • Ensure compliance with Building Regulations and associated legislation, keeping up to date with new legislation and technical developments.
  • Mentor and support junior surveyors, helping them develop technical skills and professional judgement.
  • Respond to dangerous structures, demolition notices, accessibility and fire prevention work.
  • Contribute to service improvement, innovation, and income generation opportunities.

We’re looking for a proactive, technically excellent surveyor who can combine expertise with a customer-first approach. You will have:

  • A degree (or equivalent) in Building Control, Building Surveying, Construction, Structural Engineering or a related field.
  • Membership of RICS, CABE, CIOB or equivalent, with ongoing CPD.
  • Substantial Building Control experience, including complex and high-rise schemes.
  • Strong knowledge of Building Regulations, related legislation, and the construction industry.
  • Excellent communication, organisational, and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a supportive team.
