Building Surveyor – North East Region

Are you an experienced Building Surveyor with a strong social housing background? We’re looking for someone who can confidently manage complex cases, from damp and mould to Housing Ombudsman enquiries and Environmental Health notices, while delivering a high‑quality, resident‑focused service.

You’ll join our Repairs Operations team within the Operations Directorate, a priority area that plays a vital role in keeping our homes safe, well‑maintained, and fit for the future. Our work helps protect homes, improve living standards, and ensure we get things right first time for our residents.

What you’ll do

  • Manage an active and varied caseload of complex and ongoing repair issues, carrying out technical surveys, detailed inspections, and scoping complex work specifications.
  • Lead on specialist and statutory‑related cases, including damp and mould, Environmental Health notices, and Ombudsman matters, ensuring high‑quality technical advice and well‑reasoned recommendations.
  • Oversee works using Schedule of Rates (SOR), challenge over‑coding, assess quotes, and ensure value‑for‑money solutions.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and contractors, sharing learning, asking questions, and supporting team knowledge‑building across complex casework.
  • Keep residents regularly updated, ensuring clear, timely, and empathetic communication throughout each case.
  • Engage with local communities across our North East region, covering Islington, Hackney and Tower Hamlets.
  • Attend resident forums once per quarter (typically evenings) and support strong local engagement.
  • Participate in our weekly team day every Monday at Hugh Cubitt, Islington, working with colleagues and contractors. The rest of the week is agile working across the estate or from any local hub as required.

What we’re looking for

  • Technical expertise: HNC or RICS-accredited (or working towards), with strong hands‑on experience in building surveying within social housing or local authority environments.
  • Strong knowledge of responsive repairs, diagnostics and scoping (not quantity surveying).
  • Ability to manage complex, ongoing casework, including damp and mould, disrepair, EHO notices and Ombudsman investigations.
  • Excellent communication and IT skills, with the ability to explain technical issues clearly to residents and stakeholders.
  • Collaborative and curious: someone who works well with colleagues and contractors, asks questions, shares knowledge and supports continuous improvement.
  • Resident‑focused and organised, able to work independently, prioritise effectively and deliver in a fast‑paced, reactive environment.
