Job summary

The Business Support Officer is responsible for providing business and secretariat support to the Office of the Police Chief Scientific Adviser (OPCSA) meetings, functional committees/groups and governance structures. As well as general business support across the team to support its effective operation. The job holder will be the first point of contact to the OPCSA and must present a professional, efficient and effective manner to maintain the image and reputation of the team.

Job description

  • Responsible for the provision of a cross-team business support service to the OPCSA ensuring that an effective, efficient and customer focused service is delivered.
  • Provide business support for the OPCSA’s work programmes and Private Office; support to the development and maintenance of plans, delivery of projects and products on time.
  • Provision of administrative and business support for strategic meetings including collating and quality assuring agendas and papers, taking and circulating minutes and chasing action updates. Along with supporting in the preparation and running of OPCSA boards including the Police Science Council.
  • Produce reports and presentations, draft letters and responses to routine and non-routine enquiries ensuring that information is prepared and presented in a professional and timely manner.
  • Maintain spreadsheets and other business management tools in a timely accurate manner in support of OPCSA business.
  • Booking accommodation and travel for the OPCSA team and support with other administrative functions including finance (invoices etc) commensurate with the grade.
  • Monitor the team and private office mailboxes and respond promptly and professionally to all internal and external queries, escalating to the Secretariat Lead, wider Private Office and other OPCSA team members when required.

Person specification

Essential Criteria:

  • Excellent analytical and organisational skills, including: the ability to plan and manage multiple work-streams and competing priorities; evaluate, analyse and swiftly summarise information from a wide variety of sources; a keen eye for detail and accuracy in written and financial reports.
  • Ability to deal effectively and professionally with problems that occur, seeking guidance where necessary.
  • Experience of managing competing issues and priorities, including to tight deadlines.


Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience of providing comprehensive secretariat and business support within a large public or private sector organisation, including maintaining accurate records and preparation of relevant documentation.
