Job summary

The SFO is a unique law enforcement organisation which both investigates and prosecutes the top tier of fraud, bribery and corruption and related money laundering. We bring the skills of our lawyers, investigators, accountants, analysts, digital experts and administrators together on every case from the outset; working closely with law enforcement and criminal justice partners in the UK and overseas.

Case Controllers are responsible for leading our case teams. You will be accountable for one or more cases of serious or complex fraud, bribery or corruption and will have oversight of the case from case adoption through to investigation and, where appropriate, charge, prosecution and any post-trial matters. You will plan and have responsibility for the investigation strategy, reporting to a Head of Division, and working closely with colleagues across the wider business.

Case Controllers play a vital role in ensuring cases proceed at pace and in accordance with the relevant legal and other applicable casework standards. You will be accountable for liaising with the Head of Division to agree the resources required for your cases and will be accountable for ensuring that the staff allocated to your cases work together cohesively and professionally and are provided with regular feedback on their performance and development. You will also be a part of the senior leadership team of the division you are assigned to and, as such, will be expected to contribute to the wider corporate goals of the division and / or the business as a whole.

Case Controllers who are qualified lawyers may also act as the nominated prosecutor on one or more of their cases. There may be an occasional requirement for travel, both across the UK and overseas.

Job description

As a Case Controller you will be responsible for:

  • Provision of leadership and management in respect of one or more allocated case teams; including line management responsibility for a number of G7 direct reports.
  • Management of the investigation and, where applicable, prosecution of one or more cases; including the formulation of appropriate investigative and prosecutorial strategies designed to ensure effective case outcomes.
  • Management of allocated resources (including people and money) to deliver agreed case outcomes.
  • Management of identified risks: legal, operational, financial or reputational.
  • Tasking, monitoring and reviewing investigative and other case related tasks to allocated staff.
  • Working across the business and with external professionals, including Counsel, to achieve effective case outcomes.
  • Provision of reports and case updates, as required, to the Head of Division and to members of the SFO’s ExCo, including the Director, the Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel.
  • Ensuring that best practice and case learning is captured and, where appropriate, disseminated to the teams and the wider division.
  • Contributing to wider office initiatives such as acting as a subject matter expert in relation to the provision of training or in the context of external engagement, as agreed with the Head of Division.

Essential Technical Criteria

  • An experienced UK qualified lawyer or an experienced senior investigator

Essential Experience Criteria

  • Significant experience as a lawyer or senior investigator working within a complex legal or investigative environment; specifically, in the context of serious crime or regulatory activity.
  • Experience of working at a senior management level in a multi-disciplinary, professional environment.
  • A CV outlining your job history and qualifications.
