Contract Type: Permanent
Working Hours: 37 hours per week

About the Department

The Commercial Waste Team forms a key part of Thurrock Council’s wider Waste & Recycling Services, delivering tailored waste and recycling solutions to businesses across the borough. The team focuses on service quality, environmental responsibility, and income generation to support the Council’s financial and sustainability goals. This role supports that mission by developing new business opportunities, building strong customer relationships, and ensuring high standards of service delivery.

About the Role

The Commercial Waste Sales Advisor will generate new business, manage existing customer relationships, and promote the Council’s commercial waste and recycling services. The role focuses on increasing revenue, improving customer satisfaction, and supporting sustainable waste management practices.

As the Commercial Waste Sales Advisor you will be responsible for:

  • Sales & Business Development

    • Identify and pursue new commercial waste customers.
    • Conduct site visits to assess client needs and recommend suitable waste solutions.
    • Prepare and present quotes, tenders, and service proposals.

    Customer Relationship Management

    • Act as the main point of contact for trade waste customers.
    • Resolve queries and complaints in a timely and professional manner.
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with customers, suppliers, and internal teams.

    Contract Management

    • Ensure customer contracts are completed accurately and stored correctly.
    • Monitor contract performance and service delivery standards.

    Compliance & Environmental Standards

    • Ensure all services comply with waste legislation and environmental regulations.
    • Promote sustainable waste practices to clients.

    Collaboration & Reporting

    • Work closely with operational teams to support smooth service delivery.
    • Produce sales reports, forecasts, and market insights.
    • Support marketing campaigns and maintain the customer database.
    • Monitor competitor activity, market trends, and service developments.

    Performance & KPI Management

    • Meet individual and team sales targets.
    • Monitor KPIs including revenue growth, customer retention, and service uptake.
    • Adhere to Council and legal requirements relating to Quality, Environmental and Health & Safety standards.

What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for someone who has:

    • Proven negotiation and sales skills, with the ability to influence, upsell, and secure new business.
    • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to plan, prioritise, and manage competing demands effectively.
    • Excellent data analysis and reporting abilities, including interpreting complex data and producing clear, meaningful performance metrics.
    • Proficiency in maintaining accurate records, spreadsheets, databases, and management reports.
    • A systematic and methodical approach to problem‑solving, identifying issues and implementing effective solutions.
    • Flexibility in working hours, with the ability to adapt to operational and customer needs.
    • In‑depth knowledge of waste legislation and regulatory requirements relevant to commercial waste services.
    • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to present information clearly and confidently.
  • Legislation and of any other key practice standards
