As a Data Engineer (Performance Data Enablement) you will work with a wide range of stakeholders such as performance leads, service owners, product managers, delivery managers, analysts and engineering managers, helping teams understand and improve service performance through better use of data.
You will coordinate and organise the work needed to make data available, understood and trusted for reporting and performance dashboards. This includes mapping data sources and lineage, agreeing definitions and KPI logic, improving data quality, documenting datasets, and reducing manual reporting.
You will work closely with Power BI developers and other analysts to enable the delivery of consistent, reliable dashboards and performance metrics.

Tools we rely heavily on (Core Tooling)
- Excel and Power BI for analysis, validation and supporting reporting activities
- SharePoint for document management and collaboration
- Confluence and Jira to capture requirements, manage work and maintain documentation

As a Data Engineer in HMCTS you will:
- Work with stakeholders to understand performance questions, identify data needs and translate these into clear reporting and data requirements.
- Map data sources, key fields, business rules and lineage to enable consistent performance reporting and reduce ambiguity in KPI definitions.
- Coordinate activity across teams to improve availability of data for dashboards, including resolving dependencies and agreeing ownership and handovers.
- Document datasets, definitions and data handling guidance so reporting assets can be built and maintained efficiently and safely.
- Support the reduction of manual reporting by standardising processes, improving data accessibility and promoting re-use of trusted datasets and definitions.
- Work closely with Power BI developers to ensure datasets and metric definitions are fit for purpose for dashboard development and ongoing monitoring.
- Support information governance by ensuring data is handled appropriately, shared securely and access is proportionate to need.
- Work collaboratively in agile delivery teams, contributing to planning, prioritisation and continuous improvement.
- Share good practice, coach colleagues where appropriate and contribute to building capability across the team.
Skills & Experience:
- Experience coordinating work across multiple stakeholders to deliver agreed data outcomes (for example mapped data, definitions, or improved data quality).
- Experience analysing and validating data using tools such as Excel and/or Power BI, including clear documentation of findings and assumptions.
- Experience mapping data sources, definitions and lineage and producing clear documentation that can be used by others (for example analysts and developers).
- Experience defining and applying data quality rules, validating outputs and working with others to resolve issues at source.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain data concepts to non-technical audiences and influence agreement on definitions and approaches.
- Experience working in a delivery environment (for example agile) and using tooling such as Jira/Confluence to manage work and maintain documentation.
- An understanding of information security, privacy and ethical considerations when working with operational and performance data, and how to mitigate risks.

We’re seeking a Data Engineer with the ability to coordinate, organise and improve how data is defined, documented and made available for performance reporting. The ideal candidate will have:
- Experience working with stakeholders to define metrics and data requirements, and to agree and document KPI definitions.
- Experience producing data mapping/lineage documentation that supports consistent reporting and reduces manual effort.
- Experience improving data quality through validation, rules, and issue resolution with data owners and delivery teams.
- Confidence using common tools (for example Excel, Power BI, SharePoint, Jira/Confluence) to analyse, coordinate and document work.
- An understanding of information security and appropriate handling of sensitive data in line with organisational requirements.
