DWP is the UK's largest government department. We help people into work and make payments worth over £195bn a year to support some of society’s most vulnerable people. The Data Lead is responsible for managing and developing the data needs of DWP’s Working Age Services (WAS).

You will be responsible for developing multidisciplinary data capability across WAS, identifying capability needs and championing its implementation with both data and wider digital staff and stakeholders. You will support WAS by providing expert guidance on the value of data in achieving priority outcomes based on your technical expertise.

This is an exciting time for WAS Data as DWP moves to adopt a ‘hub & spoke’ approach, and this role will be key to the success of this transition.

Job description

Key responsibilities include:

  • Establishing and leading a core team of data professionals to implement DWP’s Data strategy within WAS. Identifying gaps in existing data capability (people, products & practices) and developing and implementing a programme of work to address these. You will directly line manage members of the core team and have a matrix management approach leading many others.
  • Working alongside a G6 Lead Data Scientist and G6 Lead Delivery Manager for data to provide overall leadership of data activity in WAS.
  • In support of WAS outcomes, driving forward the implementation, compliance and assurance with the overall DWP data strategy in WAS and being the lead point of collaboration.
  • Working with senior colleagues in WAS and wider DWP to agree WAS data needs and ensure these are continuously supported.
  • Accountable for data related communications and upskilling across WAS.

Hybrid Working

This role may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in their DWP office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and your office will be your contractual place of work.

If a hybrid working arrangement is suitable for the role and for you, you will normally be required to spend a minimum of 60% of your contracted working hours from your DWP office.

Salary Information

The regional pay for this role is from £75,026 to £92,522.

The maximum salary for the grade is £80,267, however a Digital Allowance of up to £12,255 per annum is available for exceptional candidates.

In both instances, Digital Allowance is non-salary, and non-pensionable, and is classed as a temporary allowance. It is reviewed annually where it could be retained, amended, or removed.

Our offer to successful candidates will be based on an assessment of your skills and experience as demonstrated at interview.

Existing Civil Servants who secure a new role on lateral transfer will maintain their current substantive salary.

Existing Civil Servants who gain promotion will move to the bottom of the grade pay scale or receive a 10% increase applied to their current substantive salary, whichever is greater.

Any temporary allowances that you are currently in receipt of will not form part of the calculation to determine your pay. Any allowances that are in payment will cease when you move into your new role.

Selection process details

This vacancy is using Success Profiles (opens in a new window), and will assess your Experience and Technical skills.

Stage 1: Application

Your application will consist of four parts:

1. A Personal Details application form.

2. Employment history - this should contain your work experience and any skills, qualifications and accomplishments relevant to the jobs you have completed.

3. Personal statement - up to 1000 words. This statement should be used to provide examples of how you meet the essential criteria below:

  • Strategic Data Leadership and Vision: demonstrable experience of setting and delivering a strategic vision for data that aligns to organisational priorities, modernises data services and embeds data‑driven decision‑making at scale.
  • Leadership and Capability Building: proven experience of leading, motivating and developing multidisciplinary data teams, including direct and matrix management, while building sustainable data capability and inclusive high‑performing cultures.
  • Influential, Stakeholder Engagement and Collaboration: strong ability to influence at senior levels, build trusted relationships across DWP, government, industry and academia, and align diverse stakeholders behind shared data outcomes.
  • Strong communication and insight skills: exceptional communication skills, with the ability to translate complex data and analysis into compelling insight that supports strategic and operational decision‑making.
  • Proven experience and background in governance and Risk Management: evidence of accountability for governance and risk across data portfolios, ensuring compliance while enabling innovation and pace.

4. Technical statement (up to 250 words). The following statement is aligned to the required technical skill of Technical Breadth. This statement should be used to provide example(s) of how you meet the criterion below:

  • Technical Breadth: you will have a deep understanding of the technical data concepts required across a multi-faceted enterprise, understanding the limitations and opportunities of digital technology.

Ensure that all examples provided in your statements are taken directly from your own experience and that you describe the examples in your own words. If you choose to use gen-AI to support your statements, you must follow the guidelines outlined in the Artificial intelligence and recruitment guide.

The sift panel will use the information in your employment history, personal statement, and technical statement to assess your experience, skills and knowledge.

An initial sift will be conducted using the technical statement. Candidates who pass the initial sift will be progressed to a full sift.

Stage 2: Interview

If you’re successful at the sift stage, you’ll be invited to a video interview via Microsoft Teams. During the interview, you’ll be assessed against the experience criteria listed under both the essential criteria and technical skill.

You will be asked to do a 10-minute presentation on the following topic:

Please describe how you have embedded the concepts of data strategy, sharing and ownership within a complex multi-layered organisation.

There will be a further 5 minutes for questions. The use of visual aids such as PowerPoint will be allowed. Further details will be provided to candidates invited to interview.

Interviews will take place from mid-June 2026. Interview dates to be confirmed.
