Team/Division Overview

The DVS Application Operations Engineer will form part of the Application Development & Support team and will be responsible for the ongoing maintenance and support of the Power BI platform, which underpins the Data Visualisation Service.

Responsible for ensuring the technical continuity of the Data Visualisation Service, the Application Operations Engineer will provide advice and support to business users of the Power BI platform by setting up new workspaces, triaging and resolving faults, and assisting with queries around optimisation of outputs.

They will work closely with a range of stakeholders and business areas to understand user requirements and where required support them in migrating to DVS.

Job description

An application operations engineer maintains services and is responsible for conducting user and security administration.

At this role level, you will:

· monitor applications and be accountable for batch processes

· in some organisations, carry out the duties of an end user computing engineer, such as fixing technical problems, maintaining hardware and liaising with the problem or incident manager

Your main day to day responsibilities will include:

· Maintaining the Data Visualisation Service platform from the technical side.

· Ensure continuity and availability of Data Visualisation Service platform for the business to use by working as part of a multi-disciplined application support and development team, and closely with Cloud Infrastructure and Central Technical Services teams.

· Support the wider business users of the Power BI platform by setting up new workspaces and assisting with queries around optimisation of report production.

· Review, test, implement and communicate product updates via the agreed change processes.

· Liaise with the Service Desk on faults or requests and triage and, where necessary, resolve them as promptly as possible.

· Work with the Product Manager to advise and support business areas migrating into the Data Visualisation Service.

· Liaise regularly with users to ensure an up-to-date awareness of their user requirements, considering if and how the service needs to be adapted to meet changing needs.

· Continually review the product and the service to identify potential issues or deficiencies and work with the Product Manager to proactively address these.

· Support the Product Manager in ensuring the DVS is being effectively used through regularly reviewing and reporting on usage metrics.

· Working as part of a multi-disciplined application development and support team, and closely with Cloud Infrastructure and Central Technical Services teams.

· Provide technical advice on the DVS user community by engaging with them via the Teams user group.

Selection process details

A reserve list may be held for this opportunity. Any candidate who is successful in being offered a reserve status, will remain on the reserve list for 12 months.

Any Welsh Government office to act as base for successful postholder. The successful postholder may be expected to occasionally travel to Welsh Government offices.

In the event of a large number of applications, an initial sift will be conducted against the lead assessment criterion: Experience - Experience of maintaining and supporting a successful Microsoft Power BI service. Candidates who pass the initial sift may be progressed to a full sift or progressed straight to assessment/interview.

In the case of more than one candidate scoring the same, the panel has agreed the following criteria will determine merit order:

  • Experience - Experience of maintaining and supporting a successful Microsoft Power BI service.
  • Experience - Experience of using Azure and SQL with a high level of proficiency.
  • Experience – Experience of working with a range of customers to ensure business needs are met.

DDaT Technical Assessment

Candidates who successfully demonstrate that they meet the minimum Experience Criteria will be invited to interview.

You will receive a technical scenario for you to prepare a response ready for your interview. The technical scenario and instructions will be emailed to you 5 working days before your interview.
