Job summary
Defence Intelligence (DI) is part of the Ministry of Defence and provides intelligence support to decision making across all levels of Defence and government and delivers specialist outputs including operations.
As part of Cyber & Specialist Operations Command (CSOC), DI supports the Chief of Defence Intelligence to ensure that key strategic decisions made by Ministers, senior officials, the Armed Services and the broader National Security Community are informed by high quality, authoritative intelligence advice and assessment.

Job description
The Strategic Effects Coordination Officer is a new position based within the UK mission in Canberra, Australia. The position will embed in the Combined Intelligence Centre-Australia (CIC-A). The CIC-A is a FIVE EYE entity that sits within Australia's Defence Intelligence Organisation (DIO), focussed on analysing issues of shared strategic concern in the Indo-Pacific.
The focus of the role is to inform and enable the generation of intelligence to support military planners and address key security challenges in line with MOD and CIC-A objectives. This will involve working on shared objectives with a heavy emphasis on liaising with analytical and operational components across DI, the UK National Security community and with key allies and partners.
Key responsibilities include:
- Develop partner relationships in Australia, facilitating liaison and collaboration.
- Develop collaborative relationships with UK partners including in the British High Commission and with Australia-based UK embeds from other parts of Defence.
- Support the capability development projects.
- Provide high-level briefings to senior stakeholders.
- Conduct opportunity analysis employing all-source analysis techniques.
For this role you will need to have:
- Proven experience of collaboration and adaptability.
- Ability to demonstrate that you can apply a methodical approach to your work.
- Experience of planning, or an interest in developing knowledge of the planning process.
- Ideally, have a broad range of defence and intelligence experience.

Person specification
To be successful in this role, it is essential that you have and can demonstrate:
- Prior experience of working within operational intelligence.
- A well-developed understanding of the UK national security architecture.
- Awareness of all source analysis methodology and standards.
- Knowledge and understanding of hostile state ‘grey zone’ activities.
- Good leadership skills including an ability to foster an innovative and cohesive working environment.
- Excellent communication skills with an ability to confidently engage with seniors and stakeholders.
- Ability to work quickly and flexibly; managing a portfolio of work that will vary between long term planning and short notice tasks delivered at pace.
- A background in, or willingness to learn, operational planning, or project or programme management within a relevant security context.
- Experience of collaborating with other teams or departments to deliver a common goal.
- An aptitude for critical thinking.
- A willingness to obtain Developed Vetting
Tour Length
The post has a duration of 2 years, with the possibility of a mutually agreed 1-year extension.
Pre deployment Preparation
This position will require the successful candidate to undergo a period of training in the UK prior to taking up the overseas post. The incumbent will also be expected to spend a period in the UK to conduct acquaintance visits with/to key partners across DI, Defence and wider Government.
