The Industrial Strategy Unit leads the whole of government effort to implement the UK’s Modern Industrial Strategy. Published in June 2025, the Strategy sets out a 10-year plan to increase business investment, drive productivity and support growth across all parts of the UK.
This role sits within the Industrial Energy group, which leads delivery of the British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme (BICS), a programme within the Industrial Strategy. BICS is a high-profile priority that will reduce electricity costs for thousands of energy intensive businesses, supporting growth in key sectors.
Job description
This is a fast-paced priority area, and the successful candidate will provide high-quality diary management and business support to senior leaders across the Industrial Strategy Unit. The role will lead on managing three Deputy Director diaries and provide overflow support to the Director ensuring time is prioritised effectively in a high-profile environment.
Alongside diary management, the role provides broader business support across the team to help ensure the smooth day-to-day running of the office, including support for coordination, meetings, actions, clearances and routine office processes.
The successful candidate will also contribute to team administration and wider ways of working, providing dependable support across changing priorities in a fast-paced setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage three Deputy Director diaries, ensuring priorities are reflected and time is used effectively
- Provide overflow and surge diary support to the Director during periods of pressure or competing priorities
- Coordinate internal and external meetings, balancing competing demands and responding quickly to changes
- Anticipate and resolve diary clashes, proactively flagging issues and proposing solutions
- Support Deputy Directors with team and SMT meetings, including logistics, tracking actions and following up with teams to ensure deadlines are met
- Support the coordination of clearance requests, commissions and other business asks, working with teams to ensure timely input and delivery
- Act as a key point of contact for Deputy Directors, triaging queries and directing them appropriately
- Draft routine emails and support routine business processes, including managing distribution lists, maintaining the team organogram, carrying out general administration and raising purchase orders where required
- Arrange travel, visits and logistics where needed, and ensure Deputy Directors have papers for meetings
- Support team communications, ways of working and planning for events or away days at the request of Deputy Directors
- Provide wider business support as needed, responding flexibly to changing priorities

We are looking for someone who is organised, confident and able to work well in a fast-paced office. You will be proactive in managing diaries, understand what is most important, and use your judgement to help make sure meetings happen at the right time.
You will need to work well with senior leaders and colleagues across the team, build strong working relationships, and provide calm and reliable support in a busy office environment.
Essential

- Proven ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality support in a fast-paced environment
- Experience of diary management, meeting coordination or providing wider administrative support, with the ability to make sound prioritisation decisions and respond to changes at short notice
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and build effective working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders
- Ability to work proactively, use judgement and take ownership of tasks to support effective delivery
- A reliable, flexible and resilient approach, with the ability to respond positively to changing priorities and urgent requests
- Confidence in using Microsoft Office
