We have an excellent opportunity for a Digital Innovation Engineer to join our Digital Innovation team here at Wokingham Borough Council, on a Full-Time, Fixed-Term basis.

As Digital Innovation Engineer, you will research and evaluate emerging technologies to support service improvement and operational decision-making. Working with the Digital Innovation Manager, you'll deliver proof-of-concept and pilot initiatives, applying technologies such as AI, APIs, and RPA to improve efficiency and capability.

You'll act as a technical adviser on projects, providing specialist input to colleagues, suppliers, and partners while resolving technical issues collaboratively. You'll maintain up-to-date knowledge of digital technologies through horizon scanning to identify service improvement opportunities.

You'll prepare technical documentation, reports, and presentations, explaining complex concepts accessibly. Using agile and iterative approaches, you'll develop prototypes and solutions that can be reused or extended across the Council.

Key Responsibilities

  • Research and evaluate emerging technologies to drive service improvement and provide evidence-based recommendations for innovation.
  • Deliver proof-of-concept and pilot initiatives using AI, APIs, and RPA to enhance service efficiency and capability.
  • Act as a technical adviser, providing specialist input and resolving issues through collaborative problem-solving.
  • Conduct horizon scanning to maintain up-to-date knowledge and identify new digital opportunities.
  • Share technical expertise to promote effective tool usage and build digital capability across the organisation.

Candidate Requirements

  • Degree-level qualification in a relevant field or 5–7 years of professional experience in digital, data, or technology roles.
  • Practical experience with low-code platforms (e.g., Power Apps), RPA concepts, and scripting languages like Python or SQL.
  • Understanding of databases, data analytics, visualization techniques, and cloud infrastructure (Azure/AWS).
