Job summary
The DfE is supported by around 8,000 staff across multiple sites, and it works with 15 Arm's Length Bodies. These bodies play a critical role in the administration of our funding, the delivery of services, and the provision of regulation and advice across the sector.

- Teaching, learning and training for young people and adults in apprenticeships, traineeships and further education.

Job description
The role and key responsibilities:
- Leading work with DGs, Directors and SROs across the Department to drive delivery of the Secretary of State’s top priorities – from Best Start in Life to SEND to skills. This will be underpinned by strong data and performance disciplines, identifying risks early and unblocking barriers to progress. The Delivery Director will be a central and high profile leadership role in the department as we move into the next phase of the Parliament and increasingly focus on delivery. In doing so, you will work hand-in-glove with the Strategy Director to ensure that delivery insight is fed effectively into strategy.
- Acting as Chief Project Delivery Officer for DfE – leading oversight of the Department's portfolio of major programmes. As well as responsibility for overall performance, you will work to further build delivery capability and professional project delivery expertise across the department.
- Leading on governance structures, investment management, benefits and risk management across the Department.
- Building capability on Test, Learn and Grow – establishing a DfE satellite team together with the Cabinet Office to deliver TLG projects, spread effective practice and embed new ways of working across DfE.
- Buildingtrusted, influential relationships with the Secretary of State for Education, Permanent Secretary, Ministers, senior leaders across DfE, key stakeholders across Whitehall and across our sectors. You will also work particularly closely with Sir Kevan Collins as lead Non Executive Director and delivery adviser.
- Directly leading around 70 high‑performing staff, alongside professional leadership of more than 500 project delivery staff across the Department. You will provide clear vision and direction, promote high standards, create psychologically safety and empower teams across the Directorate and the department to deliver outcomes that matter for children, young people and families.
- As a highly visible senior leader within the Strategy Group and across DfE, you will help shape the culture, direction, and future of the department – ensuring teams are engaged, supported, and empowered to deliver.
Person specification
Essential criteria:
- Extensive senior experience leading or overseeing successful delivery in a complex organisation or system – driving performance, maximising impact and unblocking barriers.
- Highly developed communication and influencing skills, including at the most senior levels.
- Proven success in leading high‑performing teams through organisational change – promoting high standards, creating an inclusive environment, and building psychological safety.
- Ability to lead teams confidently in challenging, fast-moving situations – balancing multiple pressures while ensuring clarity, good decision making and collective resilience.
- Strong data and analytical skills, with experience leading teams to gather and interpret complex data and convert analysis into clear action.
It would be desirable for candidates to be able to demonstrate the following criteria:
- Demonstrated understanding of the education, care or skills system, shown through work with relevant stakeholders, policy areas, delivery bodies or sector organisations.
Benefits
Alongside your salary of £100,000, Department for Education contributes £28,970 towards you being a member of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. We offer flexible working arrangements, such as job sharing, term-time working, flexi-time and compressed hours.
Most DfE employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending at least 60% of their time in an office or work setting. Changes to these working arrangements are available in exceptional circumstances, but must be agreed with the line manager and in line with the requirements of the role.
Travel to your primary office location will not be paid for by DfE, but costs for travel to an office which is not your main location will be covered.

Stage 2 - Interview
Shortlisted candidates will be required to:

2.Attend an in-person informal conversation with the Secretary of State for Education in London week commencing 20 April 2026.

The formal interview will be a 2-part process:
Part 1: Prepare and deliver a presentation to the panel. Please be prepared to answer follow up questions on the presentation. Presentation details will be provided to shortlisted candidates closer to the time of the interview.
Part 2 - The interview will last approximately 60 minutes. You will be asked questions on the essential criteria listed above to determine your level of experience in these areas. Questions will typically ask for a brief and broad overview of your experience relevant to a criteria (e.g. tell us about your experience delivering policy projects) and/or a specific example (e.g. tell us about a time when you….). We may also ask you some follow-up questions.
As part of the recruitment process, we may request references.

Terms and conditions of candidates transferring from ALBs and NDPBs
Bodies that are not accredited by the Civil Service Commission and are not able to advertise at Across Government on Civil Service jobs will be treated as external new starters and will come into DfE on modernised terms and conditions with a salary at the band minimum.
Bodies that are accredited by the Civil Service Commission but do not have civil service status will be offered modernised terms and will not have continuous service recognised for leave or sickness benefits. Salaries should be offered at band minimum, but there is some flexibility where this would cause a detriment to the individual.
Bodies that are accredited by the Civil Service Commission and do have Civil Service status will be treated as OGD transfers. Staff appointed on lateral transfer will move on to pre-modernised DfE terms (unless they were on modernised terms in their previous organisation). Staff appointed on promotion will move on to modernised DfE terms. Staff will transfer over on their existing salary (on lateral transfer) and any pay above the DfE pay band maximum will be paid as a mark time allowance. Staff moving on promotion will have their salaries calculated using the principles set out in the attached OGD transfer supplementary information.
