Job summary
The Defence Nuclear Organisation (DNO) is responsible for the provision of the nuclear deterrent, encompassing our submarines and nuclear warheads, while also advising on UK nuclear planning and fostering international co-operation on nuclear matters. With a multidisciplinary team of over 700 professionals, the DNO brings together expertise in science, engineering, finance, policy, programme delivery, and more. We work in partnership with the Royal Navy, the Submarine Delivery Agency and the Atomic Weapons Establishment as the Defence Nuclear Enterprise (DNE).

The post sits in the International Programmes and Information Security team within Warhead Group. The team is responsible for the management and administration of Warhead Groups programmes and interactions with international partners. The team also has responsibility for the policy relating to the protection of some of the UK’s most sensitive defence nuclear information, and for the management and coordination of the provision of technical advice relating to the classification of that information.
The purpose of this post is to assist the Atomic Control Office (ACO) Policy and Delivery Managers in the delivery of their duties, and the maintenance of the capabilities of the ACO; with the ACO responsible for the security and safeguarding of classified information pertaining to the UK’s nuclear weapons capability and nuclear propulsion technology.
This post is advertised at 37 hours per week.
Job description
The postholder is expected to support the ACO with a wide range of duties including: acting as the liaison between the ACO and the International Liaison Office (ILO) at the Atomic Weapons Establishment; support the management of the team’s Liaison Officer database; management of the processes and procedures outlined within UK atomic policy and international agreements; processing of visit requests and IT account applications; undertaking classified document transfers; assisting the Branch Security Officer (BSO) as Deputy BSO, and providing resilience and support to wider London based personnel.
This work involves control of highly classified documents and special handling materials, maintenance of physical and electronic filing and records systems, diary and admin assistance, as well as wider office management and secretariat responsibilities. The postholder should expect regular and routine interactions with a wide range of personnel at all levels both within DNO, the wider Ministry of Defence, across other Government Departments, and with a range of partners across the UK nuclear enterprise. Some interactions with foreign partners will also be a feature of this role.
Due to security constraints, this post is exempt from hybrid working requests. Requests for flexible and condensed working patterns can be considered but may be limited. Candidates should consider this and must discuss with recruiting line manager before submitting an application.
As the post holder will have access to very sensitive information, there are limitations on travelling to a small number of countries and we will undertake additional security checks as part of the recruitment process. - Any relevant security and/or information management related training.
Desirable Skills:
- Previous experience of working in a national security related role, handling classified information, ideally in the Ministry of Defence, Foreign Office, Cabinet Office or Home Office would be an advantage but is not essential.
