The National Centre for AI in Policing is one of the most high-profile and ambitious technology programmes in UK policing today. Backed by central government investment and sitting at the heart of the police reform agenda, Police AI is redefining how forces use data, technology and advanced analytics to tackle crime, protect the public, and modernise frontline operations.

Job description
As the Engagement Manager for Academia & International Partners, you will be instrumental in expanding Police AI's reach and impact through external collaborations. You will be responsible for fostering relationships with leading universities, cutting-edge research institutions, and influential international bodies.
This role is pivotal in driving AI innovation within policing, facilitating the transfer of cutting-edge knowledge into practical applications, and establishing a robust pipeline for future AI talent, ensuring policing is at the forefront of technological advancement in the AI landscape.
The scale and pace of change anticipated over the next three years are unprecedented. We will be required to operate at the intersection of operational policing, advanced technology, governance, ethics, and public accountability. Success will depend on balancing innovation with assurance, agility with rigour, and national coordination with local operational realities.
In this role you will:
- Build and manage partnerships with academic institutions to drive AI innovation and knowledge transfer.
- Design and manage a PhD pipeline linking research to operational policing needs.
- Identify, shape and progress opportunities arising from partnerships into funded projects, collaborative programmes or capability development activity.
Person specification
You should have should have:
- Strong understanding of academic research systems, funding structures and collaboration models.
- Working knowledge of innovation ecosystems and research-to-application pathways.
- Experience of developing and managing academic and/or international partnerships, including building credible relationships and identifying opportunities for mutual benefit.
- Experience of securing or contributing to research funding bids, including shaping proposals, coordinating inputs and supporting successful outcomes
- Ability to analyse and synthesise complex research, funding and stakeholder inputs to develop clear recommendations and effective partnership approaches.
Technical skills
We'll assess you against these technical skills during the selection process:
- Please provide an example when you have developed and managed an academic and/or international partnership. How did you approach building a credible relationship?
- Please provide an example when you have secured or contributed to research funding bids. How did you shape the proposal and ensure all appropriate inputs were secured? What was the outcome?
- Provide an example of when you have had to analyse and synthesise complex research and stakeholder inputs to develop a clear set of recommendations for actionable activity.

Whilst this fixed term contract is offered on the understanding that it will only last as long as the stated contract length, there could be a possibility that it could be extended or made permanent should circumstances allow.
