Job summary

This is a short-term role for a maximum of 6 months, which is available on both

level transfer and temporary promotion. This is a busy time for the Visitor Economy Team with a number of ongoing priority projects. This role is an opportunity to shape a high-profile government strategy and put in place the foundations for its implementation. The successful candidate will play an important leadership role during this period, providing line management to 4 Grade 7s and leadership of the wider policy team of 10, and provide essential support to the deputy director.

Job description

Key responsibilities during this period will be:

  • Driving forward delivery of the Visitor Economy Growth Strategy, working across government and with senior sector stakeholders to ensure it is ambitious, coherent and ready to deliver.
  • Post-publication, providing oversight of the implementation framework needed to turn the Strategy’s ambitions into action, including clear ownership, governance, delivery structures and ways of tracking progress across Government.
  • Maintaining important stakeholder relationships with the Visitor Economy Advisory Council and the British Tourist Authority, including acting as the DCMS observer for the VisitEngland Advisory Board.
  • Preparing for and coordinating DCMS's activity around World Travel Market and delivering ministerial priorities
  • Supporting the Minister ahead of her Culture, Media and Sport Committee hearing, examining the future of the UK’s tourism industry.

Person specification

Essential requirements:

  • A strong track record of leading people and programmes through complex, uncertain or changing circumstances, setting a clear direction and enabling teams to deliver at pace.
  • The ability to move confidently between strategy, policy development and practical implementation, ensuring that advice is grounded in a strong understanding of how outcomes will be delivered.
  • The ability to assess complex and sometimes competing evidence, identify the key issues and make sound judgements about options, risks, dependencies and consequences, translating this into clear advice, including for ministers.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to build effective relationships with a range of stakeholders, commanding their confidence and leveraging their expertise and work through other teams to deliver your own priorities.
  • The ability to explain complex issues clearly and provide confident, well-judged advice to Ministers and senior leaders.

Desirable skills:

  • Knowledge of the visitor economy sector and stakeholders.
  • Experience of project or programme management.
