
Epidemiological Analyst
Job summary
The main responsibilities of the postholder will be to develop and maintain enhanced surveillance systems for vaccine preventable diseases, working closely with a wide variety of professionals from both within and out of UKHSA to ensure high quality data. They will understand vaccines, how they work and their utility in the national immunisation programme. They will be proficient at using different database platforms and tools (R, MS Access and SQL) and experienced in using statistical packages for performing epidemiological analyses and writing scientific papers for publication. They will produce regular and ad hoc outputs from these systems for inclusion in routine national and international reports, information requests and peer review articles. They will be comfortable presenting research work at local and national meetings and conferences. They will also manage the disease-specific web pages on the UKHSA website, ensuring that the old content is reviewed and updated in a timely manner. They will be responsible for supporting other departmental staff in website maintenance, developing infectious disease surveillance databases, database querying and report running.

Job description
• Develop and utilise information and data systems related to the projects to underpin public health action across the department and surveillance systems
• Have responsibility for the development and productivity of the data system(s) related to the projects
• Undertake specialist and complex analyses of quantitative and/or qualitative datasets
• Analyse and evaluate quantitative and qualitative data and research evidence from a range of sources to inform decision making
• Receive, interpret, provide and advise on complex epidemiological and statistical information about the health of populations to the NHS, Department of Health and others
Specialist Advice and Evaluation
• Communicate effectively and diplomatically research and other specialist information with colleagues from own or other disciplines and present findings at local, national and international meetings and conferences
• Write and/or contribute to national and local policy setting reports, as well as peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals, on the health of the population
Research and Development
• Undertake literature reviews, perform statistical analysis, evaluative research surveys, audits and other research as required
Teaching and Training
• Assist in teaching and training courses run at Centre for Infectious Disease Surveillance and Control, Colindale and outside, by producing presentation materials
The postholder will:
• Maintain, develop and document enhanced surveillance systems including databases for each area of responsibility in collaboration with Consultant Epidemiologists, Clinical Scientists, Reference laboratory staff, Field service and Health Protection Teams where appropriate
• Create and update queries and data validation checks for the removal of duplicate records, data formatting and ensuring completeness of data.
• Liaise with regional stakeholder staff providing surveillance data
• Liaise with clinicians, laboratories and HPTs regarding individual cases and outbreaks
• Develop, update and maintain appropriate pages on the UKHSA website and dashboard in a timely manner. Work closely with scientists/managers on validation of content of the web pages to ensure uploaded data meets UKHSA website guidelines
• Run regular queries on a wide range of databases to prepare annual surveillance reports for Health Protection Report as appropriate.
• To assist the Information Officer with appropriate ad hoc queries for Parliamentary Questions and other information requests
• To assist the Information Officer with the preparation of appropriate annual data sets for international organisations eg. World Health Organisation (WHO) and European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC)
• Maintain appropriate disease specific Reference Manager databases in liaison with departmental scientific and medical staff
• Contribute to papers for scientific journals and reports for the Department of Health and the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation upon request
• Present surveillance data and study results at in-house and national meetings/conferences, and attend national meetings/conferences as appropriate
• Provide database and website support for other infectious disease surveillance projects
• Undertake any other duties as specified by the line manager, or Head of Department
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
You should pursue a programme of continuous professional development in accordance with any relevant professional registration or statutory requirements, while maintaining appropriate awareness of service provider requirements.
Identify, discuss and action own professional performance and training / development needs with your line manager through appraisal / individual development plan. Attending internal / external training events. Be able to share data science practices across departments and in industry, promoting professional development and use of best practice.
To participate in all mandatory training as required, i.e. fire safety, information governance and all other mandatory training.

Essential role criteria
• Educated to degree level (or equivalent level of qualification) in a relevant science subject
• Post-graduate (MSc) degree in Epidemiology
• Experience of scientific research, particularly in public health or epidemiology

Stage 2: Interview
Competency Based
You will be invited to a single face to face interview at our site in Colindale. In exceptional circumstances, we may be able to offer a remote interview.
Knowledge, experience, skills & abilities will be tested at interview.
There will be a one-hour technical assessment prior to the interview (on the same day) and the first part of the interview will be based off of the assessment followed by more generic questions, leaving time for you at the end to ask us questions. The assessment will be a short coding assessment in R. A dataset will be provided for analysis, and candidates will be asked to demonstrate their ability to write clear, structured code to explore the data. The exercise is designed to assess epidemiological thinking and coding approach, rather than arriving at the “correct” answers. We are primarily interested in how candidates structure their analysis, interpret data, and communicate their reasoning through code.

Location
This role is being offered as office based at our Scientific Campus in Colindale. Based at our scientific campus, you will be required to have a Counter Terrorism Check security vetting check as a minimum. For meaningful National Security Vetting checks to be carried out individuals need to have lived in the UK for a sufficient period of time. Salary Information
If you are successful at interview, and are moving from another government department, NHS, or Local Authority, the relevant starting salary principles for level transfers or promotions will apply. Otherwise, roles are offered at the pay scale minimum for the grade, but in exceptional circumstances there may be flexibility if you are able to demonstrate you are already in receipt of an existing, higher salary. Pay increases are through the relevant annual pay award for the role and terms.
