We are seeking a reliable and proactive Estates Caretaker to join our Estates Team based at our Hadlow campus. This is a key role in helping to provide a safe, welcoming and well-maintained environment. As a member of the Estates Team, you will play an important part in the day-to-day operations, safety and presentation of our buildings and grounds. You will carry out routine safety checks, basic maintenance tasks, portering duties and respond to jobs logged through the Estates Helpdesk. Flexibility, teamwork, excellent communication skills and a strong commitment to health and safety are essential.

What you’ll do:

  • Carrying out routine safety checks, including fire doors, fire extinguishers, fire alarms and emergency lighting.
  • Undertaking termly safety tours of buildings and external areas.
  • Monitoring buildings for cleanliness, hazards and defects and taking corrective action where appropriate.
  • Logging, updating and completing jobs via the Estates Helpdesk.
  • Reporting defects or hazards that cannot be resolved immediately to the Estates Manager.
  • Assisting Estates Technicians in maintaining buildings, facilities and grounds.
  • Portering duties including furniture moves, exam and event set-ups, and preparing teaching and meeting spaces.
  • Opening and locking buildings and ensuring safe access across the campus.
  • Supporting College events such as theatre productions, open days and seasonal events.
  • Supervising deliveries, receiving goods and assisting with transport between sites.
  • Undertaking basic cleaning, litter collection and vehicle valeting and checks.
  • Participating in emergency arrangements, including out-of-hours call-out.

What we’re looking for:

  • A practical, dependable professional with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong understanding of health & safety in a facilities or estates environment.
  • Full driving licence and willingness to undergo further training as needed.
  • The willingness to assist across a wide range of duties as essential.

The Role:

Where you’ll work: This role is based at North Kent College’s Hadlow campus.

Your hours: 42.5 hours per week, 52 weeks per annum, to be worked on a shift rota basis (earlies and lates) covering the hours of 6am – 7pm Monday to Friday. You will also be required to participate in an emergency out of hours on-call rota, which will require you to be on-call an average of one week in four.

Your pay: £28,357.84 per annum, plus an additional £100 for each week spent on-call for out of hours emergencies.
