Job description

This role is available until 31/3/27 as a fixed term appointment or as a secondment for colleagues employed directly by the College or the Civil Service. Applications from candidates who do not meet these criteria will not be considered.

There are currently two vacancies. Where we have extra suitable appointable candidates a reserve list will be held.

National Centre for Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) & Public Protection (PP)

This is an exciting and rewarding opportunity to join the National Centre for Violence Against Women and Girls & Public Protection (NCVPP) within the College of Policing. The NCVPP provides support to forces in tackling the threat of VAWG and PP and improving our services to victims. You will also work with academics, victim groups and across Government to support our ambition and to ensure our work reflects the lived experiences of diverse communities.

We are working to continually train and upskill our officers and staff with the specialist knowledge and expertise required to carry out their roles effectively. We also continue to develop programmes, expanding on existing best practice with a focus on perpetrators and preventing life-long harm to victims.

Our vetting

If you are successful at interview, you will be required to undertake pre-employment security checks. You will be sent a security questionnaire which must be accessed within 24 hours.

This role will specifically work within the National Centre for Violence Against Women and Girls and Public Protection (NCVPP) and work across various research projects.

The selected candidate will:

Work across various research projects, sharing knowledge and good practice and supporting professional development. Contribute to improving knowledge and practice within a multi-agency community. Work to improve the safeguarding system, including policing, through providing expert research, analytical and subject matter advice to help ensure products and services, are based on the ‘best available’ evidence. Lead a programme of high-quality and value-for-money research, analysis and review activity in support of the NCVPP strategy and business plan. Proactively identify opportunities to develop the evidence base on priority issues within the multi-agency safeguarding system, or increase the capacity for research, analysis and review work that informs policy and practice. Contribute to improving knowledge and practice within the safeguarding system, including with the College and policing.

The role will also benefit from being part of the College’s research professional community, and the Government Social Research profession.

Person specification

Some of your responsibilities will include:

  • Identify strategic gaps in the evidence and provide advice on where research and analysis can add most value to inform prioritisation of research and analytical resources. Engage with Delivery Leads and wider College and external stakeholders to provide expert advice, and understand their evidence needs; translate unfocussed requests and ideas into effective research designs. Develop own knowledge of the policing landscape and specialist knowledge of the evidence base in the delivery area to be in a position to provide expert advice​
  • Lead the planning, designing and commissioning/conducting of research and analysis programmes to meet evidence needs of stakeholders, using appropriate methods including innovative approaches and complying with Government Social Research and College standards​
  • Promoting and ensuring the appropriate use of evidence in decision-making and communications, performing a challenge function where required. Communicate complex research and analysis information both written and verbal to a variety of audiences, including senior non-specialist customers, drawing out key facts and issues to influence decision-making and challenge policy and practice where necessary

To be successful in this role you’ll need:

  • An established track record in designing, carrying out and managing social research and/ or analysis and providing and publishing research and analysis-based advice and briefings ​
  • Evidence of both quantitative and qualitative research skills including evaluating and integrating research and analysis information from a variety of sources, coming to logical conclusions and communicating this effectively to senior non-specialists, assisting them to take on key findings and implications​
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders at all levels and work collaboratively to ensure the best outcome is achieved ​
  • Demonstratable knowledge of child safeguarding and multi-agency practice
  • To already be a member of the Government Social Research profession or have passed Government Social Research entry requirements at recruitment

If successful at sifting stage you will be invited to complete the GSR Knowledge Test. You must pass this in order to progress to interview and will have 7 days to complete the test once its sent.
