Expert Witness Officer (Drug Trafficking)
Job summary
Working as part of a small, highly specialised team within the National Investigative Capabilities (NIC) Expert Evidence Team, you will deliver world‑class expert evidence to support the criminal justice system in the UK and internationally. You will examine and assess evidence, produce legally robust expert reports, and give oral testimony in courts across the UK and overseas.
Alongside casework, you will contribute your subject matter expertise to NCA strategic and intelligence-led activity, helping shape operational responses to drug trafficking. You will also support capability development by delivering specialist training in expert evidence and related disciplines.
Job description
In this specialist role, you will provide authoritative drug‑trafficking expert evidence to support complex investigations and prosecutions in the UK and internationally. You will be responsible for examining exhibits, analysing case material, and producing high‑quality, legally compliant expert reports that meet the exacting standards required for courts at all levels. You will also deliver clear, impartial and credible oral testimony as an expert witness, contributing directly to successful judicial outcomes in some of the most serious and sophisticated drug trafficking cases.
Maintaining your professional currency is essential. You will regularly update your role‑based CV to reflect the development of your expertise, ensuring that your knowledge remains aligned with the evolving methodologies, markets, and behaviours seen across global drug supply chains.
Beyond direct casework, you will play an active role in supporting the core functions of the Expert Evidence Team (EET). This includes participating in the quality assurance of expert reports to ensure clarity, accuracy, and compliance with legal and organisational standards. You will work closely with investigation teams and partner agencies, offering timely specialist advice that guides evidential approaches and informs investigative strategy. The role also involves preparing and delivering presentations and expert evidence training to colleagues, law enforcement partners, and wider stakeholders, helping to build organisational capability in the use and understanding of expert evidence.
You will contribute to the Agency’s broader intelligence and strategic picture by submitting team‑generated insights, trend analysis, and learning to the corporate record, strengthening the NCA’s understanding of drug trafficking threats. A further element of the role involves gathering and maintaining up‑to‑date drug price data and market perspectives, ensuring that assessments and reports are informed by robust and current intelligence.
Through this work, you will help safeguard the integrity and credibility of the NCA’s expert evidence provision, ensuring that complex drug‑related investigations are underpinned by robust analysis, impartial expertise, and world‑leading professional standards.
This is not a capability that can be developed quickly. Expert witness competence in drug‑trafficking cases is built over many years of operational exposure, specialist knowledge acquisition and extensive courtroom experience. An expert must be able to demonstrate their expertise, credibility and reliability to every trial judge on each occasion they give evidence; this level of assurance can only come from sustained practice, not short‑term training.
The successful candidate must be able to provide expert evidence immediately in support of major NCA and partner investigations at the highest levels of criminality. Only a current, fully qualified expert can meet this requirement.
A suitably experienced expert will already possess, and be able to demonstrate, a thorough understanding of the legislation and guidance governing expert evidence, including the Criminal Procedure Rules, Criminal Practice Directions, CPS Guidance for Experts, and the Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act. They will be capable of applying this knowledge confidently and consistently in complex, high‑profile criminal proceedings.
Additional information regarding the assessment process: Candidates who pass the application sift will be invited to attend an in-person panel interview (location to be confirmed).
At the beginning of your interview you will deliver a 10-minute visual presentation to the interview panel. Upon arrival you will be given the topic of the presentation and will then have 25 minutes to prepare. Pens, flipchart pads and a flipchart stand will be provided.
After the presentation has concluded you will then continue with the interview.
