Scheduled monuments are archaeological and historical sites of national importance designated under the Historic Environment (Wales) Act 2023. The post holder will join a team of six regionally based Field Monument Wardens and will have primary responsibility for monuments located in South-West Wales.
Field Monument Wardens are lone workers, and this job involves visiting scheduled monuments of all types and periods from prehistoric to twentieth century to record their condition and provide management advice. Most monuments are on farmland or in open countryside; many are in remote and upland locations only accessible by foot.
The postholder will need to hold a full driving licence to be able to drive to farms and to monuments within the region; the rural, sometimes remote, nature of many sites means that public transport is not usually viable. Health and safety equipment and training for accessing remote sites will be provided.

- To undertake monitoring visits as required for scheduled monument consent, monument grants and agricultural cross-compliance or heritage crime cases and undertake associated reporting.
- To provide professional advice for simplified scheduled monument consent applications.
- To create, edit and update Historic Asset Database records relating to scheduled monuments and upload photographic and other data to Welsh Government’s records systems.
- To undertake archaeological monitoring and recording, minor excavations or survey recording exercises on scheduled monuments as required.
