We are also a friendly, inclusive and sociable workplace that prides itself on fostering great team spirit. Our two largest offices are 1 Horse Guards Road in London, opposite St James’ Park, and the Darlington Economic Campus, which also contains eight other departments. The 21st century offers huge opportunities and poses new challenges for the UK. Working at the Treasury is your chance to help the country chart the right course.
Job description
These positions are exciting and varied roles suitable either for recent graduates, or for experienced candidates seeking a new challenge. You will work with a team of analysts and policy officials as we explore the biggest challenges facing the UK financial system.
Through original analysis and engagement with key partners, you will build the Treasury’s expertise, influence policy development, and support the Treasury’s response to global events.
The first position will focus on risks relating to non-bank financial institutions (NBFI), which includes insurance companies, pension funds, hedge funds and private market asset managers, among others. The work involves assessing risks developing in NBFIs and related markets, and how these developments impact UK financial stability and the financial sector’s ability to support economic growth. This work ensures that emerging policy is grounded in robust analysis and supports a stable and dynamic financial system. To help deliver this work, you will draw on extensive data sources such as Bloomberg and Preqin, and will utilise our relationships across Treasury, with the wider regulatory authorities (the Bank of England and Financial Conduct Authority) and with industry.
The second position will focus on global and cross-cutting risks, including risks related to climate change, the growing use of AI, geopolitical developments and other topical trends. The post holder will support the team’s priority work to enhance financial system preparedness for geopolitical risks, including by scoping relevant projects and building relationships across Government, and with the Bank of England.
Both positions sit within Treasury’s Financial Stability Group. We are a friendly, diverse and inclusive group, supporting different working patterns, and with colleagues working from different locations. The Group’s unique offering includes the Women in Financial Stability Network to provide a space for women to connect and to support their career development. All colleagues are able to benefit from Treasury’s generous annual leave, parental leave packages, and flexible and hybrid working options (where business needs allow).
Given the nature of the work, specific role portfolios may evolve to reflect changes in the team’s priorities. However key responsibilities will include:
- Delivering original analysis on topical issues to deepen the Treasury’s expertise in financial system risks, and support policy development. Recent examples of analysis undertaken by the team include deep dives on developments in private markets, AI investment trends, and geopolitical risks.
- Presenting and communicating your analysis and assessments of emerging topical issues to senior audiences in Treasury, including delivering briefings for ministers and senior officials.
- Maintaining positive relationships with colleagues across the Treasury, Government and the UK’s financial regulators (particularly the Bank of England and Financial Conduct Authority).
- Contributing to policy development where financial stability risks have been identified, including by supporting Treasury’s engagement with the G7, G20,Financial Stability Board, and the Financial Policy Committee.
- Providing live market monitoring and assessments of market risk for HMT seniors and Ministers, with opportunities to develop relevant Bloomberg skills and in-depth market knowledge.
