Job summary

Great British Energy will be a publicly owned, operationally independent energy company, designed to drive clean energy deployment, boost energy independence, create jobs and ensure U K taxpayers, billpayers and communities reap the benefits of clean, secure, homegrown energy. Setting up Great British Energy is one of government’s first steps for change and we will do this in a way that means it will have both an early impact and long-term success.

Through its five functions (Project development, Project investment, Local Power Plan, Supply chains and Great British Nuclear), Great British Energy will speed up the deployment of mature and new technologies, as well as local energy projects, to support the government’s aim of decarbonising our electricity system by 2030 whilst also ensuring we can meet future demand as we further decarbonise the economy.

To this end and as an example of what it can achieve, we have already agreed a major partnership between Great British Energy and The Crown Estate to accelerate deployment and support U K supply chains.

Great British Energy will work collaboratively with industry, local authorities and communities, and other public sector organisations such as the National Wealth Fund, to spread skilled jobs and investment across the country. Great British Energy will be backed by a capitalisation of £8.3 billion of new money over this Parliament.

In recognition of Scotland’s leading role in the UK’s clean energy revolution, Great British Energy will be headquartered and run from Scotland.

Roles in what will become Great British Energy will initially be undertaken in shadow form within the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. They will then be transferred to Great British Energy when the Great British Energy Bill becomes law and the company has the necessary procedures and systems in place to employ people directly.

Job description

You will work in the GBE Finance function which will provide you with a great opportunity to work in a fast paced and challenging environment. The roles will involve you working with internal and at times external stakeholders, including DESNZ, HMT, Cabinet Office, wider HMG and Energy suppliers and investors.

We are building a high performing and friendly team who are working on supporting the whole of the Great British Energy, this is a great opportunity to build and embed a high-quality finance team.

Person specification

• To help develop the finance function in GBE by providing support across the financial control and financial planning areas by:

• Supporting the management of budgets, actuals and forecasts including monitoring level of committed/uncommitted funds for RDEL and CDEL budgets

• Managing end to end Purchase to Pay; Purchase Orders, receipting and invoicing

• Managing the GBE balance sheet for the company's assets, liabilities, and equity investments and undertake monthly reconciliations

• Lead on month-end accruals and journals to ensure costs are correctly and accurately accounted for in the right place and right colour of money

• Extract Finance reports and information from the finance system and supporting tools, and look for opportunities to enhance this reporting

• Work with HR to provide accurate and timely information relating to headcount numbers and associated costs

• Actively engage and provide information to our key internal collaborators PMO, Finance and HR business partners and Deputy Directors

• Provide support to the interim and year end audit process – e.g., development of working papers and providing evidence to auditors as required

• Support development of GBE’s financial policies and processes

• Provide accurate information to support ad-hoc queries as requested e.g., FOIs and Parliamentary Questions

Essential criteria

• Qualified or part-qualified accountant with recognised body (e.g., CIPFA, AAT, CIMA, ICEAW, ACA)

• Good financial skills and experience, including management accounting and operational finance

• Experience successfully delivering within a finance capacity and good knowledge of government budgeting and accounting

• Excellent attention to detail and able to identify inconsistencies and errors in finance data

• A proactive individual with organisational skills, comfortable with working in a fast paced and pressured environment, and a shown ability to plan and handle competing priorities

Desirable criteria

• Confident to work collaboratively with the ability to build and maintain successful relationships with a wide range of collaborators

• Find it easy to negotiate and get on board and collaborate with a wider range of partners, both internal and external to the team

Qualifications

Qualified or part-qualified accountant with recognised body (e.g. CIPFA, AAT, CIMA, ICEAW, ACA)

Office attendance
