Here’s where you can help decide a better future for us all.
What You’ll Be Doing
We are looking for an experienced General Trade Operative to join our Gas Insourcing team. The role involves carrying out making-good works following the installation of boilers and heating system components in occupied and void housing properties and other Council owned premises. You will ensure that any walls, floors, or decorative surfaces disturbed during the works are repaired to a high standard in line with best trade practice and current regulations.
This position requires delivering work to a consistently high standard of quality and customer satisfaction, completing tasks right first time. You will use your skill and judgment to determine the best solutions for repair problems and maintain an adaptable approach when working with tenants, leaseholders, and other customers.
The role covers a range of general building trades, including carpentry, painting and decorating, patch plastering, minor tiling repairs, and surface preparation. You will also provide support to gas installation engineers with tasks such as lifting and positioning boilers and radiators, on-site clean-up, waste clearance, and handling materials.
This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act and will require an Basic DBS.
All About You

You will be a skilled and adaptable general tradesperson with the ability to repair building faults and defects using cost-effective solutions. Fully competent in a range of building repairs across multiple trades, you’ll bring experience of working in a maintenance environment on occupied properties and demonstrate the ability to work independently, using your own initiative to resolve problems while seeking guidance when needed. Teamwork is essential, and you’ll have experience collaborating in a multi-skilled environment. Physically fit to carry out manual tasks, you’ll also have a strong understanding of Health & Safety principles and the sequencing of building maintenance work. Excellent communication and customer care skills are key, along with the ability to manage your own time effectively and use technology such as PDAs to receive and update work.
You should hold a relevant trade qualification such as an apprenticeship, City & Guilds, or NVQ in carpentry or general building trades, with demonstrable experience in your field typically three years for a single trade or seven years for multi-skilled work.
