The Head of IT Operations plays a pivotal leadership role in ensuring the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) technology services are robust, secure and continuously improving. Operating in a modern, hybrid working environment, the CMA depends on highly available digital services, modern end-user technologies and cloud-based platforms to deliver its statutory functions effectively.

Job description

You will be accountable for the operational delivery of the CMA’s digital and technology agenda, ensuring IT services are reliable, resilient and aligned to organisational priorities. This includes leading multidisciplinary teams across Service Desk, End User Computing (EUC) and Digital Products and Services (DPAS) - ensuring seamless service delivery across multiple locations.

You will also act as the IT lead for property related projects, ensuring technology considerations are embedded in workplace design and change programmes. You will build capability, drive service excellence and foster a culture of continuous improvement across the IT Operations function.

Person specification

For the first stage, you will be required to draft a personal statement of no more than 750 words providing evidence and examples that you have the knowledge and experience for each of the first three essential criteria.

An initial sift based on the first criteria point (Lead Criteria) may be held if a large number of applications are received. If your application progresses to a full sift, the remaining two elements will then be considered.

  1. Proven leadership of a business-critical technology function in an organisation of comparable scale and complexity, with the ability to set direction, inspire teams and build high performing, multidisciplinary capability at pace (Lead Criteria).
  2. Significant programme delivery experience, delivering major technology or digital transformation, including organisational redesign, service modernisation, capability uplift and adoption of new operating models.
  3. Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, with the ability to build trusted relationships at senior levels, communicate complex issues clearly and shape strategic decisions.

Selection process details

This vacancy is using Success Profiles (opens in a new window), and will assess your Behaviours, Experience and Technical skills.

Application and sift stage

  • As part of the application process you will be asked to complete a CV, personal statement and an online application form. Further details about application requirements are listed on the application form.
  • The selection process will comprise of the sift (CV & application review), and an interview.
  • Please note that it is essential that your personal statement is aligned to provide evidence that you have the knowledge and experience for each of the essential criteria (as included on the role profile attached and listed above under 'Person Specification') in your application. Your personal statement should be no more than 750 words.
  • An initial sift based on the first criteria points (Lead Criteria) may be held if a large number of applications are received. If your application progresses to a full sift, the remaining two elements of the essential criteria listed under Person Specification will then be considered.
  • We may raise the score required at sift stage, to progress to interview if we receive a high number of applications and take through the highest performing candidates to the interview stage.
  • Successful candidates at sift will be invited to an interview which will be conducted either in-person or via Teams.

Interview stage

  • At the CMA we apply a blended interview technique, allowing us to find out more about you and we use the Success Profiles framework assessing the Behaviours, experience and technical skills listed in the advert and attached role profile.
  • The interview will be a 45 minute-one hour panel interview where you will be asked questions based on the Behaviours, Experience and Technical skills outlined in the role profile.
  • At the start of the interview, you will be asked to give a short presentation based on the Technical element 'Operational Service Excellence' and will be provided a topic to prepare from, if invited to interview.
  • Technical elements we will assess at the interview:

    Operational Service Excellence, Digital and Technology Transformation, Technical Breadth Across Modern IT Environments.

  • A reserve list may be held for up to 12 months from which further appointments may be made for the same or similar roles.

Timeline (the dates outlined below are indicative and may be subject to change)

  • The advert closing date is Tuesday 3rd March 2026 (23:55). We are not able to accept late applications.
  • The sift is scheduled to take place between 4th and 11th March 2026.
  • Interviews will be held 24th & 25th March 2026.
