Job description
This post offers an excellent opportunity for candidates looking to work on an exciting range of topics and develop a broad range of skills. The post holder will be joining an energetic community of analysts and policy advisers.
Key responsibilities include:
- Advising the Chancellor, Special Advisers and the Treasury’s Executive Management Board (EMB) on the evolution of the UK’s monetary policy framework. Explore policy options for the remit of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) to support the delivery of the government’s economic objectives, and the implications of trends, such as low structural interest rates.
- Advising the Chancellor and EMB on UK monetary policy developments. Including changes in the stance of monetary policy (including unconventional monetary policy such as Quantitative Easing/Tightening) and the consequences for the government’s economic and fiscal objectives.
- Ensuring the coordination of monetary and fiscal policy by supporting the Chief Economic Advisor in their role as Treasury representative to the MPC and the Chancellor’s discussions with the Governor of the Bank of England.
- Leading the branch’s analysis on the economic and operational implications of monetary policy decisions, and potential future monetary policy tools.
- Supporting the Treasury’s Chief Economic Advisor in appointing external members to the MPC. This involves designing and running a fair, open and competitive recruitment process.
- Developing and maintaining engagement with the Bank of England staff.
- Line managing one HEO and one SEO - providing leadership, support and stretching opportunities.

- Economics qualification to at least an undergraduate level, or equivalent

Hybrid working: HM Treasury operates an office based working approach across all Treasury sites. There is an expectation of a minimum of 60% attendance in the office. Please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas.

Reserve Lists
You will be placed on a reserve list if your application is successful, but we cannot offer you a role immediately. National Security Vetting
Everyone working with government assets must complete Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) checks. Additionally, successful candidates will be subject to National Security Vetting. The level of security vetting required for this role is Security Check (SC).
To allow for meaningful checks to be carried out, applicants will need to have lived in the UK for at least 3 out of the past 5 years. You will be asked to provide residency information within your application form, and eligibility for national security vetting will be checked once the advert closing date has passed. In certain circumstances, for example if you have been working abroad on a government posting, a lack of residency would not be a bar to security clearance however the Department will need to consider eligibility on a case-by-case basis once the advert closing date has passed.
